You cannot use the iPhone 4 dock with the bumpers on. One solution is to use the universal dock without an adapter. This is not an optimal solution, but works.

Hope Apple makes an adapter specifically designed for the iPhone 4 bumper.

But for now, I decided to build an adapter by myself. It’s based on the one for 5th Generation iPod (No. 9). I cut the bottom part off and changed the shape a little bit.

Fashion students from the University of Salford have teamed up with leading fashion brand Dr Martens on a one day live project to create imagery for the company’s new collection as part of its ‘How to Wear’ campaign.

Sixty students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Fashion Image Making and Styling course were paired up and given only 30 minutes to choose garments, find a model and shoot on location. Each group produced five different fashion editorial photos which were then assessed by a panel of judges, with two winning students receiving a prize of Dr Martens products.

In the aftermath of the Boston attacks, take some time to sit and consider your own life: realize for a moment how precious it is. Take some time to plan what your goals are, and how you might reach them. For, as Americans, we’ve only just realized what Israelis already know: each second in our lives is precious, and it’s up to us to use them well.

Learning from Israelis how to respond to terror.

April 16, 2013 / 6 Iyar 5773

by Yvette Alt Miller

http://ift.tt/Pij8Ie

Today, more than ever, Israel and the United States understand one another. These two democracies –which share profound respect for freedom, for human rights and dignity, these two nations who lead the world in science and technology, these firm allies – are united in their knowledge of terror, as well.

As Israelis were ending their Memorial Day, which saw 92 deaths in the past 12 months added to the tally of over 26,000 Israelis killed since records began, we in the United States endured our own terrorist attacks in Boston.

“My teacher told me about his aunt and cousin who were shot as they drove past an Arab village,” my daughter told me that night over dinner, describing her Jewish school’s Memorial Day observances. “My teacher described coming under fire as he patrolled a border one night,” one son told me. “Everyone in Israel knows someone who has died,” his younger brother told me.

Israelis of all backgrounds have long been united by the attacks they endure, attacks meant to terrorize and maim, to make them give up and leave their homes. Yet the more Israel’s enemies try to weaken it, the stronger the Jewish state seems to become. Facing terror that’s meant to destroy its citizens’ morale, Israel has managed to lead in international rankings of happiness. Terror meant to destroy Israel’s economy and infrastructure somehow has failed to prevent Israel from emerging as a first-world economy, recently ranked as the best place on earth to start a high-tech firm.

Clearly, Israel has learned some lessons that we in the United States need today. As we wake up to the day after our attacks, facing questions and looking for those responsible for the Boston bombings, comforting our many wounded and burying our dead, what lessons does Israel have to impart?

As Americans face the aftermath of the horrific terrorist attack in Boston, Israel is observing its Independence Day. This festive occasion each year comes the day after Memorial Day. Each year, Israelis first spend a solemn day remembering their many dead. Whole families visit cemeteries to pay their respects at the graves of loved ones who were killed. The entire country comes to a standstill to observe two minutes of total, profound silence the length and breadth of the country.

Then, as the day ends, Independence Day begins. This is a happy occasion, but coming as it does on the heels of intense mourning, its happiness is tempered. Amidst this juxtaposition, Israelis have a unique view of Independence Day and the freedoms having their own country grants. It’s a freedom that is heavily purchased; it’s a happiness that is mindful of the heavy price the country has paid, and continues to pay, as its enemies try to weaken and destroy it. Remembering the many sacrifices that have been made to create and maintain the Jewish state seems to make Israelis more determined to infuse their lives – both personally and nationally – with purpose.

Israelis know that freedom has come at high cost, and they’re determined not to waste a drop of it.

Other nations, including the United States, have been the beneficiaries of Israelis’ desire to channel their national tragedies into productive, positive ways to help others. In fact, the emergency doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital who are treating the wounded from the Boston Marathon were trained by Israeli doctors a few years ago in setting up a disaster relief team for just this scenario. Other innovations that have come out of Israel as a result of challenges facing the Jewish state include drip irrigation, water desalinization, emergency bandages that stop hemorrhaging, cutting-edge surgical techniques, advanced medical training programs for foreign doctors from poor countries, and the use of clowns in hospitals to help calm children.

Perhaps that’s the source of their high happiness rankings, of their world-class economy and research sector. Israelis seem to know that freedom has come at high cost, and they’re determined not to waste a drop of it, planning and using their resources instead to achieve real, valuable goals.

In the midst of our own tragedy, how can we learn from Israel? How can we internalize their strength in the face of horrific attack?

— 1. Feel the pain personally. When we empathize with other people’s pain, it helps us feel more connected with others, more human.

I saw this in my own reaction to the bombings. I went to college in Boston, and it will always be “my” city. When I heard of the bombings, I thought of a college friend who was running in the marathon. It made the connection seem so immediate, and I thought of Israel – where everyone knows someone in the area each time there’s an attack. This sort of connectivity binds us together and helps ensure we’re sensitive to other people’s pain.

— 2. Find ways to help. Reaching out to others with aid is another way to help and also to feel connected with our fellows who are in pain. This can take the form of personal aid – an example from inside Israel is the practice in recent years of citizens from all over Israel to drive down to the besieged town of Sderot, which has been bombed incessantly in recent years, to do their shopping.

Another way to aid others experiencing tragedy is to pray on their behalf. One common practice is to recite Psalms in aid of a sick or injured person. Not only does this lend strength to the victims, it helps empower us and our families too, as we cast about for ways to help.

— 3. Do good in memory of the victims. What can we do for the victims who died in the Boston attacks? Again, the example of Israel can help. There, it’s common to take on a specific obligation – for instance deciding to study a Jewish text in the memory of one who has died, taking on the performance of a new Jewish ritual, or pledging charity. Doing so elevates the memory of those who have died, and helps us spread goodness in their names.

Click here to receive Aish.com’s free weekly email.

— 4. Answer despair with hope. The Jewish prayer that’s commonly said when disasters strike is brief:

“Blessed is the faithful Judge.” It reminds us that God is in charge of the world, that He has designed it with a purpose. Even horrific events – even occasions that baffle us and leave us wounded – have an ultimate purpose. Like the Jewish mourner’s prayer, which praises God and doesn’t mention death, Jewish responses to tragedy contain a seed of hope.

They remind us that even our darkest moments can lead us to become better people. Like the citizens of Israel who tie their Independence Day celebrations to their solemn Memorial Day events, we too can ask ourselves what we can do in the face of tragedy. We too can think deeply about our response: we too can try to live better – to build a better community, to lead more deeply-considered lives – as a way to honor those who died.

— 5. Don’t take life for granted.

…..item 3)… ‘These runners just finished and now they don’t have legs’: Witnesses recount war zone at end of Boston Marathon as bombs left race course littered with limbs of 25-30 people …

… Mail Online – Daily Mail … http://ift.tt/W9yHV7 …

… Unimaginable horror as victims with missing limbs are transported away

… Surgeons battling wounds usually only seen in combat

… Doctor who ran to the scene: ‘It was like a war zone’

… Massachusetts General Hospital: ‘Several amputations’ performed

… Ten of the victims are feared to have lost limbs

… Two brothers each lost a leg, from the knee down in the blast

By LYDIA WARREN, ANNETTE WITHERIDGE and MICHAEL ZENNIE

PUBLISHED: 15:28 EST, 15 April 2013 | UPDATED: 11:06 EST, 16 April 2013

http://ift.tt/1oq88sq;

Witnesses have described how twin bomb blasts turned the 26th mile of the Boston Marathon into a war zone, littering the final stretch of the race with disembodied limbs, wounded runners who lost their legs, and a lone shoe with flesh still in it.

Surgeons spoke about operating theaters that looked like battlefield hospitals as 140 injured victims poured into the city’s hospital’s – many with wounds only seen in combat.

Reports suggest that the small, homemade explosives were packed with ball bearings that tore off feet, ankles, calves and entire legs and they exploded just outside the crowded finish line.

So far ten of the victims are feared to have lost limbs in the worst terror blast in the worst terror atrocity on US soil since 9/11 – two brothers lost a leg each in the blast.

‘These runners just finished and they don’t have legs now,’ 35-year-old Roupen Bastajian, a Rhode Island state trooper and former Marine, told the New York Times. ‘So many of them. There are so many people without legs. It’s all blood. There’s blood everywhere. You got bones, fragments. It’s disgusting.’

Mr Bastajian, who was also running in the marathon, said if he had not beaten his 2011 pace in the race, he, too, might have been one of the victims.

Doctors treating victims at hospitals across the city said many of the injuries had been caused by ‘small metal debris’, but could not confirm if they were ball bearings, which would point towards the type of device used.

Peter Fagenholz, a trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, said 29 patients were being treated there, eight of whom were in a critical condition.

He said many of the injuries were to the lower limbs and that ‘several’ amputations had been carried out.

‘It’s just depressing that it’s intentional. I can’t say I’ve ever seen this volume of patients come this quickly with this type of injury,’ he told the Daily Telegraph after having already carried out six operations.

‘It’s a lot of small metal debris. We can’t say if they were placed there intentionally or were just part of the blast.’

Dr Michael Epstein, who works in the emergency department at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said at least 21 victims were in their care.

The injuries ranged from eardrum damage to those with life-threatening injuries, with some suffering ‘extensive damage’, he added.

Brigham and Women’s treated 31 patients, many of whom had orthopaedic wounds.

A spokesman told the Daily Telegraph the victims were tested for background radiation but no contamination was found.

Even seasoned firefighters were sickened by what unfolded on a beautiful spring day in Boston.

‘In 28 years, this is definitely the worst I’ve seen,’ Boston Fire Department District Chief Ron Harrington told NBC News.

‘Bodies and body parts. Blood all over. A little boy lying in the street. A young woman in her twenties. Both dead. It was mayhem. I saw two people with arms hanging loose, and one without a leg.

‘A shoe with flesh still in it.’

At least 17 people are in critical condition and some are not expected to survive the night.

Three people have died, including eight-year-old Martin Richard, who was waiting for his father near the finish line.

Several news outlets have reported that ball bearings were used in the bombs. The small steel balls are popular among bomb-makers the world over because each one becomes a deadly projectile when launched by the explosive force of a bomb.

Some doctors, though, said they found street debris in the wounds of their patients, not ball bearings.

‘Rocks, bits of metal, soda cans, anything that is really close to a blast like that can be fragmented,’ Dr. Ron Walls, chair of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, told ABC News.

‘Everything we saw was ordinary material that could have been propelled by the device.’

Hotel owner Marc Hagopian told MailOnline how he witness unimaginable carnage 35 yards from the bomb explosion.

‘It was chaos – blood and limbs everywhere. There was a man who had lost a leg, another had lost both,’ he said.

‘There were seven, eight, nine people lying on the ground. They appeared to be dead.

‘Marathon runners were tearing off their shorts to use as tourniquets to help the injured.’

Mark was inside the Charlesmark Hotel, on Boyston Street, when the first bomb went off. As he rushed outside, the second exploded.

‘There was blood everywhere, along with severed limbs. It was just awful,’ he said.

The second bomb came about 10 seconds after the first. People were knocked off their feet by the force of it.’

Mark, 50, videotaped the aftermath, showing a man lying apparently unconscious on the pavement covered in blood.

A voice can be heard asking: “What the f*** happened, a bomb?”

Another man, wearing a David Beckham soccer shirt, is seen running around.

The area around the hotel was evacuated. Mark and his guests gathered in a restaurant two blocks away waiting for police instructions.

Hagopian’s mother Marcia Scott-Harrison, who was evacuated from nearby Commonwealth Avenue, said: ‘Mark is in total shock but at least he wasn’t hit.

‘His hotel is just yards from the finish line. A man sitting outside the hotel had his leg blown off. It is awful.

‘I heard both explosions, then a dozen cops came running up Commonwealth Avenue. They were shouting for everyone to get off the street.

‘There were young girls crying, I pulled three into my apartment building. It was chaos. No one knew what was happening.’

Amid the horror, though Bostonians showed the mettle.

Runners turned around after pounding 26 miles and raced into the disaster zone.

‘Somebody’s leg flew by my head,’ spectator John Ross told the Boston Herald. ‘I gave my belt to stop the blood.’

Videos show runners stripping off their shirts and tying them around the legs of wounded spectators for tourniquets.

Gestures as small as offering a drink of orange juice and use of a home bathroom were recounted on Twitter in an ongoing online recollection of the fellowship that emerged in the wake of Monday’s devastation.

‘People are good. We met a woman who let us come into her home and is giving us drinks,’ tweeted Ali Hatfield, a Kansas City, Missouri runner who was in town for the race.

As the city reeled from the tragedy that killed at least three and wounded at least 100, Bostonions seemed to steady themselves by reaching out to embrace those hurting even more.

‘Two Lutheran pastors walking Commonwealth, Bibles in hand. For those who need comfort, they said,’ tweeted Chelsea Conaboy, a Boston Globe blogger.

A Google Docs form was quickly set up to allow Boston residents to open their homes to marathon runners from outside the area who had no place to stay in the aftermath of the tragedy.

‘Anyone wanting to get out of the back bay come over plenty of tables and calm here and don’t worry you don’t have to buy a thing,’ tweeted a local restaurant called El Pelon Taqueria. ‘open wifi, place to charge cell, or just don’t want to be alone, food and drinks,- pay only if you can #bostonhelp.’

Pictures of heroism and humanity flooded Twitter, from police officers carrying injured young children to the residents who left their warm homes to greet runners stranded by the emergency and offer them comfort.

Fatma Tanis, a student journalist who was at the scene, told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning: ‘I saw a fireball and smoke coming our way and at the same time parents started grabbing their kids, children started crying and everyone just started running away from where the explosion happened.

She added that she instinctively walked towards the site of the explosion following the second blast and saw injured people.

‘It was extreme chaos, some people had missing limbs. People were trying to help they were holding down the wounds – pretty much everyone was in shock.

‘THERE WAS A COLLECTIVE SCREAM THAT WENT ON AND ON…’

… Jeff Chin, 27, who was a block from the explosion, spoke to People magazine about the horror he witnessed:

… ‘People started screaming. I saw a guy with his shirt off, and it was wrapped around his hand and it was soaked red with blood…

… ‘What you don’t see on TV is how loud it was after the fact. Imagine there were hundreds of people just screaming at the top of their lungs, screaming so loud. It was like a sustained scream, collective scream and it went on and on. It was piercing, just the terror that you could hear…

… ‘It was a nightmare, the worst thing you can imagine…

… ‘It was like every sense of mine was heightened, I was feeling and seeing and hearing everything. I never want to go through anything like it again, it was terrifying…’

…………………………….

.

.

In a tweet hours later, Mohsen revealed how shaken he was by the blast, ‘Only now has it hit me. Holding back tears best I can.’

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos. A man was pictured with his lower leg blown off, while children were seen being wheeled away in chairs with burned limbs.

Blood and broken glass was strewn across the sidewalks, while a emergency worker was seen checking the pulses of young women lying on the ground.

A trauma nurse told ABC that the race’s medical tent has become a makeshift morgue and that staff are dealing with injuries including severed limbs, shrapnel wounds and children with severe burns.

There were reports that a three-year-old child was injured and taken to hospital, while Adidas, which is a sponsor of the marathon, said it is still trying to figure out if all of its workers are safe.

David Abel, a reporter for the Boston Globe who was standing just feet from the finish line to record runners, recounted the scene of horror he witnessed.

‘I saw just a pile of bodies,’ he said. ‘It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life… mangled limbs, people not breathing. Within minutes, police, medical staff, marathon staff [arrived] and were just trying to carry people off as quickly as possible.’

Beck Dangler, who was on a fifth-floor patio overlooking the finish line, told NBC News that when the explosions went off, he saw a plume of smoke ‘and then the immediate scatter’.

‘You could smell it,’ he said. ‘It smelled like a giant firecracker… Then there was immediate pandemonium.’

A doctor in a medical tent around 150 yards from one of the explosions told ABC News he immediately ran to the scene.

‘We all went running over there and started to bring people into the medical tent,’ he said. ‘It was not good. Very bad. Like a war zone. 9/11 immediately came to mind.’

NBCSN reported that some marathon runners who crossed finish line continued to run to Mass General Hospital to give blood.

ABC reporter Josh Elliott tweeted that the emergency room at Massachusetts General hospital said they have carried out multiple amputations, with the number of patients as high as 25.

Every one of the 2,100 Boston police officers in the city were ordered to respond to the scene, and Boston police chief Ed Davis said FBI and state police were also sending personnel.

Steven Saurbier, who saw the explosion’s aftermath from his window, described the swift police response after he witnessed the scene from his apartment.

‘Police swarmed immediately,’ he said. ‘They removed one or two people after patting them down. There were a lot of injured people… I estimate 20 people were medically transported… I saw a woman being carried by two men and I am almost positive her left leg was blown off at the knee.’

Of the police officers in the city, around 1,000 would have working on the event already, Bratton said, with a concentrated police presence around the finish line and the area behind it.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis described the moments following the explosions and said the FBI and state police immediately sent resources.

‘All of the victims have been moved from the scene we have sent officers to hospitals to be in touch with family members and possible witnesses,’ he said.

And this is what I found in the kitchen this morning.

My husband thinks it’s normal to notice the prettiest woman in the room.

March 7, 2013 / 25 Adar 5773

by Emuna Braverman

http://ift.tt/N7Nwnc

Dear Emuna,

Whenever my husband and I go out, he always comments on or even pays attention to the prettiest woman in the room. I have told him repeatedly that it bothers me but he dismisses my concerns by saying that his reaction is normal and that I should just chill. Is he right? It makes me not want to go out with him. Am I overreacting? What should I do?

Paranoid Wife

Dear Loving Wife,

As they say, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you” Or, to paraphrase, it doesn’t mean it’s not true. I don’t believe that you are overreacting. You are correct that your husband should keep his eyes to himself (or on you!). In fact, on Yom Kippur, men have to specifically repent for their wandering eyes.

But, as with many things in marriage, the question is not who is right but how to handle it. In this case, I understand how you could find this painful and demeaning, even though your husband probably does not mean it that way and is likely more “clueless” than malicious. Your job is to determine the most effective way to achieve your goals.

Women have been given what the Torah calls, binah yesera, an extra dose of intuition, and this is the situation where we need to use this skill to figure out how to respond. Nagging and criticism are not only unlikely to be effective but may push him to act out and engage in this behavior even more (perhaps to assert his independence).

So what should you do? I think you should begin my doing everything you can to keep his attention on you and your relationship. If you are going out together, dress up for him. Talk to him, be interested in him, ask him questions about his thoughts.

You may bristle at this advice. After all, he’s making the mistake, why is it your responsibility? But the answer is that you are in this together and you want to make every effort to enhance your marriage. I do believe that the more attention a man gets from his wife, the less likely his eyes are to wander. Perhaps you’ve stopped trying, perhaps you take the relationship for granted, perhaps you’re too tired to make the effort. We can never stop trying, we can never stop making the effort – not if we want our marriages to stay alive. And that applies to every one, in every marriage, whether their husband has wandering eyes or not.

If, in spite of your best efforts, he continues in this behavior, I recommend that you go for some counseling. Maybe he will be able to hear from a third party what he can’t hear from you – how demeaning and insensitive his behavior feels to you. And maybe he will be able to express in a safe environment that it is certainly not his intention to hurt you and the two of you will be able to work out better communication skills and behaviors.

.

— WHERE’S THE LIMELIGHT?

Dear Emuna,

Last night was my daughter’s school production, their big song and dance extravaganza. She has been practicing for weeks and talked of nothing else so I was very excited to go. But the experience wasn’t as pleasant as I had anticipated. I understand that certain talented girls will always get the lead dramatic roles, musical solos and dance parts. But beyond that, it seemed to me that some girls were in every dance or choir number (and front and center no less) while my daughter’s dance group got about 30 seconds of stage time. As my daughter said to me on her way out the door, “Don’t blink or you will miss me.” While I enjoyed many aspects of the production, I was unable to quell my feelings of frustration and resentment. Can you help me?

.

— Green-Eyed Monster Mom

Dear Tiger Mom,

You are clearly a mother who is zealous on behalf of her daughter. That is good. It is a mother’s/parent’s job to look out for her children, to be their advocate, to want their best. This is just a variation of that instinct – taken to an extreme. Because it’s certainly not clear that a lead role – with all the accompanying honor and attention – is always what’s best for our children.

The most important issue here is your daughter’s attitude. Did she like participating in the play? Was she as frustrated and resentful as you or did she just have a good time? Was she able to enjoy the sense of unity and fun that rippled through the whole school?

Was her comment meant good-naturedly or was it an expression of pique?

If she is fine (and perhaps even more than fine), don’t allow your frustration to communicate itself to her.

Don’t spoil her experience and, above all, don’t introduce jealousy and resentment where there is none.

Your daughter will take her cues from you so you need to get over it! If she has the ability to take true pleasure in the good of others, then learn from her good character. Sometimes our children are our best teachers.

.

— WINNING BY CHEATING

Dear Emuna,

My 5-year-old daughter likes to play games. The problem is that she’s always changing the rules, dare I say cheating, to make sure that she wins. Is this normal or is it a bad quality that I must immediately try to uproot?

Unsure Mom

Dear Uncertain Mom,

Most likely that is just a reflection of the innate desire to win, our inherent self-centeredness and it’s certainly not uncommon in children of her age.

A very positive spin would suggest that she is a very creative person whose talents are inhibited by things like “rules” in games (that’s the excuse my husband makes when we play Scrabble!).

But since life does indeed have rules we need to follow, and since we do want to encourage honesty, I would gently introduce the idea of choosing some rules at the beginning of the game and sticking with them (although I wouldn’t fight about it). This is consistent with the Torah’s dictum “M’dvar sheker tirchak,” “Stay far away from falsehoods.”

I don’t think there’s anything to worry about at this point but I do think you should slowly and carefully try to weed out this behavior, both for her character’s sake and for her social life. Other children will only put up with this type of action for so long before they react negatively to it and then the “winner” needs to do a little bullying to keep getting her way.

Again, I don’t think you are at that point and I don’t think it’s cause for concern at the moment. I just think you should act (slowly, carefully, gently) before it is.

Artist: Marlene Dietrich

… SONGLYRICS – Know the Words … www.songlyrics.com/

Did you ever happen to hear of voodoo?

Hear it and you won’t give a damn what you do

Tom-tom’s put me under a sort of voodoo

And the whole night long

I don’t know the right from wrong

Hot voodoo, black as mud

Hot voodoo, in my blood

That African tempo, has made a slave

Hot voodoo, dance of sin

Hot voodoo, worse than gin

I’d follow a cave man right into his cave

That beat gives me a wicked sensation

My conscious wants to take a vacation

Got voodoo, head to toes

Hot voodoo, burn my clothes

I want to start dancing, just wearing a smile

Hot voodoo, I’m aflame

I’m really not to blame

That African tempo is meaner than mean

Hot voodoo make me brave

I want to misbehave

I’m beginning to feel like an African queen

Those drums bring up the heaven inside me

I need some great big angel to guide me

Hot voodoo, makes me wild

Oh fireman, save this child

I going to blazes

I want to be bad

Lili Marleen

English lyrics (David)

Mack David is credited for the American version (published in 1943 as "Lili Marlene") made famous by Marlene Dietrich, though there is speculation that Dietrich actually may have written some or all of those English lyrics herself.

Outside the barracks, by the corner light

I’ll always stand and wait for you at night

We will create a world for two

I’ll wait for you the whole night through

For you, Lili Marlene

For you, Lili Marlene

Bugler, tonight, don’t play the call to arms

I want another evening with her charms

Then we will say good-bye and part

I’ll always keep you in my heart

With me, Lili Marlene

With me, Lili Marlene

Give me a rose to show how much you care

Tied to the stem, a lock of golden hair

Surely, tomorrow, you’ll feel blue

But then will come a love that’s new

For you, Lili Marlene

For you, Lili Marlene

When we are marching in the mud and cold

And when my pack seems more than I can hold

My love for you renews my might

I’m warm again, my pack is light

It’s you, Lili Marlene

It’s you, Lili Marlene

My love for you renews my might

I’m warm again, my pack is light

It’s you, Lili Marlene

It’s you, Lili Marlene

How to Improve the 2nd Most Important Page on Flickr

photos Might Like How To Make photos you might like

Timoni West, a designer for Flickr, is out with a post detailing how broken what she calls "the most important page on Flickr" is. It’s refreshing actually. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone from Flickr actually dare to write a post that was openly critical of Flickr in public. Generally speaking Yahoo/Flickr does not handle criticism very well (have I mentioned that I’m banned from their help forum for life simply for respectfully criticizing Flickr in the past?)

Alexia Tsotsis over at TechCrunch reported on the post last night here and Kotke reported on it yesterday as well here.

The page that Timoni points to as the most important page on Flickr is in fact pretty important, it’s the page where you go to see your contacts’ most recent uploads. I would disagree with her about this being *the most* important page on Flickr (that would be the recent activity page), but it probably is the 2nd most important page on Flickr and it’s been languishing for years.

Basically the problem is this. When you go to view your contacts’ photos on Flickr, unless you actually go to their url *specifically*, there are only 4 ways to view your contacts’ photos. You can filter these photos by contacts vs. friends/family and you can filter these photos to show you the last single upload or the last 5 uploads.

That’s it.

Everything else gets buried.

So every day, the system buries much of the content that you really do want to see the *most* on flickr — the content you are absolutely most likely to engage with. The current page is quality agnostic and will show you the crapiest possible camera phone shot by someone that you barely know, just because you’ve made them a contact — at the expense of possibly showing you a photo of your own child losing her first tooth or your favorite rooftopper’s latest urban adventure (really click through on that one, you won’t be disppointed).

To compound the problem, the less frequently you visit flickr, the worse this problem becomes.

Apparently Timoni put a pitch in last year to rework this page, but we’ve yet to see anything tangible come out of this.

From Timoni:

"The page fails on a fundamental level—it’s supposed to be where you find out what’s happened on Flickr while you were away. The current design, unfortunately, encourages random clicking, not informed exploration.

The page isn’t just outdated, it’s actively hurting Flickr, as members’ social graphs on the site become increasingly out of sync with real life. Old users forget to visit the site, new sign ups are never roped in, and Flickr, who increased member sign-ups substantially in 2010, will forego months of solid work when new members don’t come back."

Spot on Ms. West.

So the question now becomes, how in the blazes do you fix this page? Timoni has some good ideas I think, but I’ll throw my own ideas in here too. And feel free if you have ideas on how to fix this page to comment below.

1. Flickr needs lists. Flickr’s current system of dumping your contacts into two buckets (contacts vs. friend/family) is sooooooooo 2004. Maybe even 2003. Flickr needs to understand that we naturally value our contacts differently. There will be a handful of people that I do not want to miss a *single* photo of. There will be some super important people in my life- my wife, my mom, my boss (joking), my dad, my best friend from when we were eight. While I have a lot of "friends" on Flickr, I need to be able to create a list of "super friends."

I may also want to slice and dice my flickr contacts up (did I mention I like knives? again, totally joking Flickr do NOT delete my account).

What about a list of San Francisco photographers? What about a list of people that are in my Hot Box Group (the best group on Flickr by the way — join here now)? What about a list of people that I’ve actually met face to face? What about a list of graffiti photographers? What about a list of neon photographers? You get the idea.

By allowing us to create lists, and then filter our contacts photos by lists, flickr helps us design our own optimal customizable experience. Twitter did lists a long time ago. Flickr needs to get with the 2011′s.

2. Use Interestingness to show me the most interesting photos of my friends. Flickr has an internal system that effectively ranks every photo on the site with a hidden score. It’s pretty simple actually, the more faves, comments, tags, notes, views, external links, etc. a photo gets, the higher the score.

Basically the crowd rates every single photo on the site. They then do two things with this data. They pick out 500 high ranking photos each day and dump them into Explore (that is unless you’ve been blacklisted from Explore like I have after I wrote a blog post critical of them). And they also use that data in their search engine — to help you find the most interesting photos that you might be looking for.

There is no reason why interestingness cannot or should not be applied to the contacts page. Mediocre camera phone shots or other photos that people dislike, should not be shown at all. On the other hand if 10 people fave a shot and it gets lots of comments, then maybe people want to see that shot more.

Flickr should give me the option to see not only my contacts and friends/family photos this way, they should also allow me to see any of my lists this way. And they should give me 5 options on how to view these photos (the last 12 hours, the last day, the last 2 days, the last week, the last month).

Having this sort of a view will allow me to quickly uncover the best photos by the people that I want to see, not just the most recent photos randomly.

3. Have a "Fresh" section. Another option I should have when viewing my contacts photos should be called "fresh." Fresh sounds so refreshing doesn’t it? Not stale like 2004.

This view would filter out all of the photos that I’ve either hid or have already interacted with. If I’ve already seen a photo in a particular view and faved it and commented on it, why show it to me again as a thumbnail? Or if I find a photo that I hate, why not let me hide that photo (or even that entire photographer’s stream without having to drop them as a contact). "Fresh" would be a new way to view only the photos that I haven’t hid/interacted with.

I will leave *what* the UI should actually look like to the Pros like Timoni. But the above functionality could turn Flickr’s tired old contacts page into something so much greater than it is.

I hope Timoni doesn’t get in trouble for writing something critical of a page on Flickr, by the way. I think it’s really great that she’s being transparent about what’s broken. Having people like that on the team is an asset. And engaging with the community to both talk about it and talk about how to improve it is a *good* thing, not a bad thing.

Speaking of which, someone really should make Zack unban me from the Help Forum one of these days. Heather’s long gone now. It’s petty and counterproductive.

Oh and totally unrelated, all of the best Flickr accounts are currently setting up accounts at 500px as well. If you are not already on 500px, you are so missing out — the quality of the photography there is mind blowing and totally blowing flickr away. You can follow me on 500px here. Check out the list of Flickr Pros who have already joined and add your own 500px url to the list as well.

Competition, such a beautiful thing!

I’ve been trying to get a job since the beginning of fall semester, and I continue to be astounded at how difficult it is to find a part-time or temporary job in Tallahassee for a college student, especially one on campus. I figured with so many buildings and facilities that need people to run them and with the number of students who transfer, study abroad or graduate every year that finding a temporary job would be as easy as going to the supermarket and picking one off the shelf. But, that’s not the case.

Studend News and Entertainment …

FEBRUARY 16, 2012 … ADAM HELM

http://ift.tt/1gJ1Yxk;

The one thing college students are concerned with after graduating is getting a good job that pays good money. The other thing their concerned with is paying their student debt. According to the College Board in 2010 “the average college student has accumulated approximately ,000 in student loan debt by graduation day”.

This is not a fun fact but in the current state of the economy approximately 60% of graduates between the ages of 21 and 29 live with their parents and many of them are either unemployed or working jobs for minimum wage.

Allison Percival graduated from SFA last May. Since she graduated she has been working full time at a minimum wage job that her mom helped her get. She has sent out more than 200 job applications, and figured her odds were pretty good at landing a good job related to her field. Percival had an internship under her belt, had been working her whole college career ,and she had her degree which only cost her a cool ,000.That was nine months ago.

With her 6 month grace period over it’s time to start paying her student loans. Percival said “I pay roughly 0 a month.” Her parents pay the other half. Even with her parents help and her working full time, minimum wage is roughly ,000 a year after taxes. That means that almost a third of her income goes straight to student loans. If she didn’t have assistance from her parents and was living on her own she would only have about ,000 a year to live off of that’s 6 a month. That’s less than the monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in Nacogdoches. That’s a tough budget to live on. Especially since most college graduates expect a nice lifestyle because they went to college. Because of this “Approximately 14 percent of all students that graduate end up defaulting on their loans within the first three years of graduating”.

Unfortunately she is fitting into what is now becoming the norm. Some blame it on the economy and some on the worsening quality of the American college education. But the facts are that “U.S. college students spend 24% of their time sleeping and 51% of their time socializing but only 7% of their time studying”. Statistics show that today students spend approximately 50% less time studying than college students a few decades ago, and I’m pretty sure it’s not because their all so much smarter than past generations.

On top of all of this college tuition continues to rise at a rate that surpasses that of inflation. According to a recent CBS News article “Average tuition and fees at public colleges rose 8.3 percent this year and, with room and board, now exceed ,000 a year”, according to the College Board. You may also be glad to know that the cost of college textbooks have tripled over the past decade. Dr. Gary Mayer Professor at SFA said that he finds the textbook industry “appalling” with new editions coming out every year with very little additions in terms of material but costing upwards of 0 new.

It also doesn’t help that there aren’t too many jobs out there for college graduates. Many job applications have listed that you need a “minimum of 3-5 years of experience” or the increasingly popular “recent college graduates need not apply”. Unfortunately this is a product of our struggling economy. With so many people getting laid off the pool of potential employees that companies are looking at hiring consist of candidates who not only have real world experience opposed to the average student having none they’re also willing to work for less. Bottom line if possible find someone to pay for your college. Apply for all the scholarships and grants you can. Last year at the regional American Advertising Federation competition there were two 00 scholarships being given away. Only four people applied out of four States so make sure and look at all your options they might not be as unattainable as you think.

You will be glad to know that not all the stories have unhappy endings. Percival did end up getting a job that is related to her field, which will allow her to live fairly comfortably and have her loans paid off in ten years. There are plenty of other success stories as well. June Parker the new supervisor of the SFA Graphic Shop in the Baker Pattillo Student Center got her job almost immediately after graduating. She had worked at the shop for a good while as a student and showed strong work ethic. Ralph LaRue the Assistant Director said that her skills and prior experience running the shop made her a perfect candidate and that he did not regret hiring a student fresh out of college.

I have also spoken with a number of different people who gave tips about finding a job after college. Dr. Gary Wilcox from the University of Texas in Austin has some tips about a job in advertising. He said that they look for many bright people but what they really look for is leaders. People who were active and well rounded in College, those who joined clubs went to competitions became officers and had internships. Many people think that their degree is all they need, but in an economy where “ there are more than 100,000 janitors with college degrees” and “approximately 365,000 cashiers have college degrees” you have to pull out all the stops. Some other important job tips such as keeping your resume updated and using contacts can be found here. There’ also plenty of useful resume and application tips such as keeping it simple and tailoring your resume for each specific job you apply for. Other tips can be found here. It’s also good to remember that many of your professors often know people in your related field and can provide internship opportunities and possible job contacts.

The job market is very competitive right now so you have to bring as much as you can to the table. Networking is very important as they say it all comes down to “who you know”. Remember college isn’t a guarantee to a good paying job just a tool to help you get there.

Students struggle to find work in a market with too few of hiring employers

While surfing the Web, I came across an advice thread for FSU students written by alumni. Most of it was obvious: study, go to class, party responsibly, etc. But, there was one piece of advice that stuck out. It read: “Get a job so you won’t be that guy who doesn’t have one.”

Easier said than done.

One thing I learned from job hunting is that some of the positions on campus have strings attached. You can work as a clerk at Strozier, but only if you’re willing to work from four in the morning until eight. You can work as an attendant at Leach, if you’re willing to commit yourself to it for at least three semesters, one of which would have to be summer. And you can definitely work at the Oglesby Union, if you’ve put in some unpaid volunteer time first.

Even when you fully employ all your resources, from résumé critiquing at the Career Center to online networking, it still isn’t enough sometimes. At the Part-Time Job Fair, which is supposed to be the perfect place to match up the employers with the unemployed, the number of people wanting applications compared to the number of people handing them out was insane. I showed up before the fair even opened with several copies of a critiqued résumé, an application already filled out and dressed in my best, thinking I would impress potential employers by being prompt and prepared and hopefully have a job before the day was out. Not only did plenty of other students have the same idea as me, but most of the employers who were handing out applications said they weren’t planning to hire anyone until several months later.

Getting a job that will pay your bills, but won’t make you miserable is a challenging task for anyone in this economy, and FSU students are no exception. It’s easy to get discouraged when you apply for a handful of jobs and never hear back from any of them.

Why? Where did you go wrong? What do the lucky people who get hired have that you don’t?

The best ways to secure a job are to network as much as you can (sometimes it really is all about who you know) and sign up for volunteer positions in whatever you think you’d be good at. Chances are employers will be much more interested if they don’t have to pay you, and if you do well as a volunteer, they’ll already know they can trust you to get the work done and when a position opens up, your name will have moved up on their priority list.

The way to work hard and make money is to first work hard and not be concerned with money. Hopefully, by the time we graduate, and can actually put college degrees on our résumés, that will change.

Why Pierce Brown Might Be Fiction’s Next Superstar

Pierce Brown is a creator of worlds. One of those worlds is the dystopian future in his impressive debut novel, Red Rising. The other exists in his bedroom.

The first thing you see in a row of DVDs is the entire Battlestar Galactica series next to Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings. There are carefully curated bookshelves lined with leather-bound fantasy novels and small gargoyle figurines that peer down at you from the top shelves. A framed and ornately drawn portrait of Death Star overlord Grand Moff Tarkin hangs above his desk on an inspiration wall cluttered with Post-Its and Polaroids.

“Whenever anyone comes in my room, I always test their nerd IQ,” he says. “If they ask who that is, I just say, ‘Oh, that’s my Uncle Grand Moff. If they know who that is, we’re friends forever — free beer for life, followed by a Star Wars marathon.”

Three years ago, at age 23, Brown sold Red Rising to Random House’s Del Rey imprint. Its publishers didn’t just buy the book — they gave him a three-book deal so other publishers wouldn’t be able to scoop him up. That preemptive offer is something that is “rare” for a first-time author, according to Mike Braff, the editor of Red Rising. Both the publishing world and Hollywood are on the hunt for the next huge franchise, and if Brown’s three-book series is what they’re looking for, then he stands to make millions. (Hunger Games‘ author Suzanne Collins is now worth an estimated $ 55 million.) Brown has already written the screenplay, which sold to Universal Pictures for seven figures, and Marc Forster, director of World War Z, Finding Neverland, and Monster’s Ball, and Joe Roth, who’s produced films like Alice in Wonderland and the upcoming Malificent with Angelina Jolie, are both attached. Now that his book has finally hit the shelves, his odds of future movie tentpole glory rest heavily on how his book sells. Not that you'd sense any pressure from sitting across from him.

“I don't know enough to be nervous,” Brown says, but he sounds a little unsure. “No,” he continues, as if trying to shake the hesitation, “because every box that needs to be checked is getting checked. I feel like everything bad that could have happened already hasn't happened; it's been all good news. So there's no reason for me to be worried except my inexperience and general fear of failure. Which I don't really have, but it creeps in on you.”

When he sold the novel, Brown was working for the NBC page program and living in Los Angeles in his former political science professor’s garage. (“At that point in my life, I wasn't in a position to turn down free rent,” he says.) Now Brown has an apartment he shares with three roommates, was able to quit his day job, recently returned from vacationing in Istanbul with friends, and his debut novel is finally out. He’s living a rather charmed life, and that roll of the dice that Random House took seems to be paying off, as the book is already being compared to The Hunger Games, the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Flies, and Game of Thrones. And it’s also gained praise from fellow authors, like New York Times best-seller Terry Brooks, who gave it five stars and said he was “captivated” by the writing.

While we are in Brown’s room, he chooses to sit about four inches off the ground in a desk chair whose legs Brown had hacked off with a hatchet. It was his dad’s old leather chair, dark wood and comfortable-looking. “I take this to the beach and I write or read,” he says, gripping the arms. He takes intermittent sips of the beer sitting next to him on the floor. “You just take it out there, and you’re super comfortable.”

Every piece of furniture in Brown’s room has a story. There’s an old trunk in the corner next to his bed that’s a family heirloom from the 1800s. He now uses it to store comic books. On top of his bed frame sits a stuffed polar bear named Clawdius that his parents gave him when he was 9 and not feeling well. There’s an unframed canvas next to the door that shows two brothers standing over a dead bird.

“That one is the first piece of art one of my friends did,” he says. “It was about a story of him and his brother. The young one on the left, the guy who’s the artist, hit a bird with a slingshot, and didn’t think he’d actually hit it, and then it fell down lame. He couldn’t kill it, because he was so sad and loves animals. So his big brother, Aaron, put it out of its misery for him.” He takes a moment to admire the piece, which is painted over pages of Tom Sawyer. “I like knowing where all of my friends’ inspiration came from.”

Brown reveals his own inspiration mid-hike in Runyon Canyon. He’s brought a backpack filled with snacks, and sports a red hat and hiking boots that look more suited for climbing up jagged rocks rather than the stroll we’re taking. The idea came while he was mountain climbing.

“I was reading the story of Antigone,” he says before correcting himself. “Re-reading the story of Antigone. So Red Rising came about because after that, I went on a climb with my friends and it's just three of us all roped together going up this steep, steep vertical. And you're alone with your thoughts and this horrible, horrible torment with your calves burning and your thighs burning. For the entire time, I was thinking this would be easier if there was less gravity. So I started thinking about Mars, which is one-third gravity, and then Antigone started bleeding into it, and then other ideas. I started brainstorming with some of my friends.”

Like many dystopian young adult novels, Red Rising is a story about survival of the fittest, and involves an arena-like setting to ferret out who will rise in this futuristic society. Colors determine your pecking order in society. Our hero, 16-year-old Darrow, is a Red, which means he’s the lowest caste and sentenced to a life of mining, ostensibly to help Mars become habitable. What Darrow doesn’t know, and quickly unearths, is that the Reds have long been enslaved by the highest caste, the Golds. And over the course of the novel, Darrow seeks justice against the group that has stolen so many people from his life.

“The entire story is about rejecting the limits that others put on you, and it’s about evil. And evil is simply greed,” he says as we inch higher up the canyon. “So it’s about combatting greed and combatting selfishness and evil. And also trying to rise above what society has told you that you have to be.”

When Brown started Red Rising, he was 22 and living above his parents’ garage in Seattle. He worked at an online startup writing marketing materials, and before that had been part of a political campaign for a senator for nine months. It took Brown two months to get a first draft done, and “a lot longer” to make the edits that would eventually get the book to a place where agents would notice him.

While we sit on a bench along one of the trails in Runyon Canyon, he talks about lining his bathroom walls with the rejection letters to remind himself that failure is a huge likelihood. It’s late afternoon, sticky hot, and the trail is unusually empty. Brown peels off the backpack he’d filled with snacks: almonds, apples, and raspberries, all organized in ziplock bags. “I have blood sugar issues,” he says. He lays the spread out between us.

Brown moved to Los Angeles in 2011, after writing the book and landing an agent, and started working in the NBC page program. He was giving a tour at NBC when he got the call about a deal with Random House.

“I had two tours that day,” he says. “I told the tour groups, 'If at any point my phone rings, I'm going to have to answer this.' These people are from Iowa and Minnesota, and they're excited to hear about anything like this. So I'm like their little protégé all of a sudden. I get the call, and then I told the group and I got high fives and I got tipped a lot of money, which was great.”

Brown’s unusual upbringing probably has something to do with his knack for storytelling. His mother, Colleen, owned a publicly traded broadcasting company called Fisher Communications until she recently sold it. Growing up around broadcasting instantly immersed him in the world of telling news stories, according to Colleen. But the real turning point came when his father, Guy, a former banker, bought his 8-year-old son a shovel.

“One of the best things that we ever did for him, to foster things, was to let him dig in the yard, because he was doing something,” Guy says. “It was real to him. He wasn’t digging the hole for the hole’s sake — there was clearly a fort. Or a mission. Or something going on. We had holes everywhere. It didn’t matter to us, because we were helping him in his quest, whatever that was. He found himself there. It meant everything to him.”

“You’d try to get after why he was digging holes, and he’d explain that they were really traps,” Colleen adds. “He’d have these elaborate stories that went with the holes.”

“He was very mischievous, and he was entertaining,” says Brown's older sister Blair. “And he can just rattle off these stories that he has in his head, or that he makes up.” She remembered a home video of Brown that she’d watched recently. “I couldn’t believe it — he was 3 or 4 years old and he was rattling off this story about Captain Hook.”

Feeling the need to be entertaining could be, at least in part, a side effect of the family’s situation. The Browns moved around a lot for Colleen’s job, with the family relocating to eight different states throughout the course of his childhood, starting in Colorado, then North Carolina, then Arizona, then Iowa, then Texas, then Seattle, then Los Angeles, and finally back up to Seattle.

“I think girls have a harder time than guys do if you're switching schools,” Brown says. “Guys don't get picked on as long as you're OK in sports.” He joined the football, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball teams in high school. “Every high school I went to, I joined in the middle of the year, so sports helped. But you see a lot of bullies when you move to eight states, I’ll say that.”

Blair acknowledges that moving around took its toll. “It was hard for us at the time,” she says, “but it made us a little more aware of our surroundings than somebody who’s lived in the same place their whole life.”

It might be that having to acknowledge each and every new place gave Brown a heightened awareness of details — details that would later come into play when he started writing novels, and an attention for detail that’s readily apparent in Red Rising.

There’s a table off in the backyard that we sit at, and it’s decorated with fall gourds. “I’m an ambiance guy,” Brown smirks.

Now that he’s officially a published author, Brown tells me back at his apartment that his day-to-day ambiance has changed a bit. He wakes up early, stays off of all social media, and writes until the late afternoon. Then he cuts himself off from writing for the rest of the day.

“Sometimes I get lured back into it, like 9 at night or something if there's a big glass of red wine and it's like, Let's write a battle scene, let's write a romance, and I play the Civil Wars with my red wine,” he says. “Feet up, slippers on and my bathrobe, oh yeah.”

Roommates aside, he’s living the life of a writer who’s already successful, even though that success has yet to be fully measured. And while Brown says that he's not nervous about the project, you get the sense that he actually is, and just doesn't want to talk focus on it. In fact, he's started to create other writing projects to keep his mind off of it. And it’s not just working on the Red Rising follow-up that’s keeping Brown busy. He’s also working on ideas for TV projects, which are literally scribbled all over the door to his room. “It’s like Game of Thrones meets Wall Street,” he says of the project, tentatively titled Birthright.

His roommate Drew Murray offers up his own portrait of Brown. “He throws on his music, and he’ll close up for an afternoon,” says Murray as he smokes cigarettes in their backyard. “No one can come in and talk to him, unless we have a beer in hand that we’re willing to share. And he’ll come running out with a new idea to show us — he gets so excited, he’s like a little kid — and he’ll have a notebook filled with sketches. He’s no artist, but you can see these creatures he creates, they can be villains, or masks or symbols, and he’s really a great storyteller. The kid’s going to be huge — and look how handsome he is!”

“Stop it, Drew. I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Brown shouts out the door at Murray. It isn't the first time he stops him.

Brown doesn’t love talking about himself, let alone having other people do it. When you ask him questions, he quickly deflects by asking you the same thing back. And when he answers a question, he tends to include you as part of the response, almost as if to share the spotlight. Even his author profile on the Red Rising book jacket is guarded, and filled with flourishes that make it read more like a piece of fiction.

Pierce Brown spent his childhood building forts and setting traps for cousins in the woods of six states and the deserts of two. Graduating from college in 2010, he fancied the idea of continuing his studies at Hogwarts… Now he lives Los Angeles, where he scribbles tales of spaceships, wizards, ghouls, and most things old or bizarre.

“I think Pierce maybe doesn’t even realize just how autobiographical a lot of Red Rising is,” Brown's editor Braff tells me over the phone. “I’ve read that book now, I can’t tell you how many times, edited it several times over. I’m so far into book two, and so far into the characters, that I’m really deep into Pierce’s psyche now. I think that in many ways, he is Darrow. In many ways he’s a guy who rose up from modest to extraordinary means and feels a kinship — ah, this is going to sound corny as hell — but a kinship with people who are social outcasts in one way or another. I think that he’s a person who is deep into two different worlds, and that makes him fascinating and it makes his characters fascinating.”

Brown originally says that none of the characters in his books are based off of people in his life. Though he later contradicts himself and reveals that the character of Sevro, Darrow's rival, was based off of a kid he knew in middle school. “Just tenacious and mean as hell,” he says. “Nice if you were loyal to him, but he would actually bite you in soccer games.”

And there is something undeniably familiar about the character of Darrow, and that idea of reaching incredible success, that seems to relate entirely to Brown. Like Darrow, Brown is drawn to people who are underrepresented, or outcast. He says he wrote the book specifically so that “people will find strength when reading the book — the kid who doesn’t want to go out, the kid who’s not social, it would be nice to give him something to motivate him. I was inspired by Enders Game as a kid, and The Once and Future King. All those things motivated me.”

And like Darrow, Brown is grappling with the incredible opportunity that’s landed in his lap. It’s taken three years to publish his book, but now it has a fighting chance of being wildly successful. Not that he hasn’t earned that chance. “I’m going to be deemed pretty young for being an author,” he says, “And it came after six books failed.”

He tells me that he’ll likely move out of the four-bedroom apartment soon and get his own place. “I’m kind of irritated by the Hollywood scene,” he says. “I only latch onto this space because it’s the first space I’ve had that’s completely mine. I’ve lived in 10 or 12 houses over the course of my life; you kind of start latching on to the things you can control. So now that I’m choosing to move, it seems like a strange thing.”

It’s late afternoon, and Brown’s beer is almost empty. “I think that I’m the most responsible roommate, but I can also be the party pooper sometimes,” he says. “I’m the one who pays the electrical bills, so I go around turning off all the lights. And I have to be the dad sometimes, and I don’t like that, because I don’t like telling people what to do. My roommates are all such happy go lucky guys, and I carry some of the stress around a lot more.”

It's the first time Brown says out loud what you can sense is just bubbling under the surface of his otherwise happy disposition: He's in a situation that he can't control — the reception to his book could make him an entertainment kingpin, or, at worst, a working author. But Brown isn't the kind of person who likes to lose control, as evidenced by the fact that he wants to remain extremely involved in the film process — he doesn't want to lose the reins on the world he's created for himself and his readers.

“I’m along for the ride,” he says, resigned, but smiling. “Hopefully the book is popular, but I can’t count on that. So it’s hard to say.”

Update: Red Rising was sold to Universal Pictures after this story originally published.
