All Of The Marvel Studios Movie Villains, Ranked From Worst To Best

http://ift.tt/1t41fw0

Being boring is bad, and not in a good way.

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for every movie released by Marvel Studios.

With Guardians of the Galaxy en route to becoming the biggest movie of the summer — and the biggest Marvel Studios movie since Iron Man 3 — it seemed fitting to celebrate the dark side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: its villains. And, let's be honest here, several of them are pretty weak. It's not that they're not evil; it's just that they're not all that interesting, or they're ill-conceived, or they're flat-out boring. So with that criteria in mind — and excluding the brainwashed Selvig and Hawkeye in The Avengers, who didn't choose their own villainy, and therefore don't really count as villains — here is a ranking of all the significant antagonists in the Marvel Studios movies, from worst to best.

Malekith (Christopher Eccleston)

Thor: The Dark World

Yeah, he wants to transform the entire universe into absolute darkness, but that and his freaky blue eyes are pretty much the dude's only defining features. I guess when you're in the same movie as Loki, there is just no competing. But, really, Malekith could not be more boring, and, I repeat, he wants to destroy the universe. When you are The Big Bad for an entire superhero feature film, the sin of total boredom is unforgivable. There is nothing worse.

Vice President Rodriguez (Miguel Ferrer)

Iron Man 3

He conspires with the Mandarin and sells out the president — and, worse, Tony Stark. So he's definitely a bad guy. But, to be honest, I totally forgot he was even in the movie. Because he's on screen for less time, though, he evokes less boredom than Malekith, so he's not quite as terrible. But only barely.

5 Tolkien Villains That Are Too Big For The Big Screen

http://ift.tt/1gp9cUm

Warning: Contains spoilers for the lesser known works of Tolkien. But let’s be honest, you weren’t going to read The Silmarillion anyway.

Morgoth, the First Dark Lord

Villains Tolkien Screen 5 Tolkien Villains That Are Too Big For The Big Screen

Other Titles: The Great Enemy, The Corrupter, The Black Foe

Size: He's the Middle-earth equivalent of a god, so whatever he's feeling that day.

Notable Deeds: The creation of all evil and discord. Literally every bad thing that happens in the world can be traced back to him. He is Satan and Pandora's box and Loki all rolled into one.

Fate: Got his feet chopped off and the rest of him thrown into the Timeless Void.

Fun Fact: Sauron, the big bad in the Lord of the Rings, was his lackey and heir.

Ungoliant

Villains Tolkien Screen 5 Tolkien Villains That Are Too Big For The Big Screen

Other Titles: Spirit of Evil, Spider of Night

Size: Ginormous. I didn't realize that was a real word. I was fully expecting that word to be red-lined.

Notable Deeds: Gave birth to all of the giant spiders, such as Shelob, who almost killed Frodo, and those seen in the Mirkwood. Her origins are unclear, and she may have just been born of the darkness. She hated the light, but also loved to eat it. Her most foul deed is when, on the orders of Morgoth, she drained the Two Trees of Valinor (what amounts to the sun and the moon), forever sullying the light that they gave off.

Fate: Might have eaten herself in her insatiable hunger, but it is unclear.

Fun Fact: Almost killed Morgoth when he wouldn't let her eat the Silmarils. He was saved at the last moment when his cries were heard by his army of Balrogs, who flew in and saved him.

Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs

Other Titles: High Captain of Angband

Size: About 20 feet of flame-wreathed evil.

Notable Deeds: Slew the High King of Noldor and captured Hurin, father of Turin, the guy who slew Glaurung.

Fate: While fighting a duel, Gothmog disarmed this dude named Ecthelion. Rather than flee, Ecthelion headbutted Gothmog with his pointy helmet, knocking them both into a magical fountain. Ecthelion drowned and Gothmog's flames were extinguished (which apparently kills him: better watch out for rain).

Fun Fact: Not to be confused with Gothmog, the general of Sauron's armies at The Battle of Pelennor Fields. You know, the guy with the lumpy face, stunted arm, and giant stones.

Glaurung, Father of Dragons

Villains Tolkien Screen 5 Tolkien Villains That Are Too Big For The Big Screen

Other Titles: The Deciever, The Great Worm, The Golden

Size: Gargantuan

Notable Deeds: The first of the fire-breathing dragons, he wreaked havoc across Middle-earth. His first foray from the breeding pits of Morgoth was just childish rebellion, but ravaged the plains of Ard-galen. He destroyed numerous armies and cities as a lieutenant in Morgoth's army, and fathered an army of dragons, and was the primary antagonist during the events in The Children of Hurin.

Fate: Stabbed with a magical sword.

Fun Fact: He is representative of Asian dragons as he is not winged, unlike the dragons that come later to Middle-earth who are representative of European dragons. pushes up nerd glasses
