How to know that you live in Bologna…

some photos Here Here are some How To photos

This is my LO for the 28th week of the 2008 Scrap Challenge, scrappers had to prepare a page with free topic, but using material such as tissue, cork and so on.

I chosed to use two postcards of Bologna, which I bought some months ago from a newsdealer just with the idea of using them for a layout.

The title recalls, in Italian, my latest entry at "TheItalianVoice" blog, I wrote an hilarious and educational list of points to use about "How to know that you live in Bologna or province, Italy".

I didn’t write the journaling, but I used some scraps where I’ve written some of the points of my list.

About the material, I used a "flowering" vellum paper which I glued in the central part of the page and some flowers of felt and tissue; I also used the green glittered powder with the glue to create some sparkling doodlings, two paper clips, two green letters of the alphabet (die cut style) and a flower-shaped brad.

You can find all the details about the challenge in my blog for scrapbooking (in English) at Juicy Creations, comments and suggestions are always very appreciated.

How to Wet Shave in 60 Seconds

some photos Here Here are some How To photos

I’ve been wet shaving for about a year now, and making time lapse videos for about 4 years now. Today I’ve combined both of them into a time lapse video about wet shaving.

I realize the steps might be a little ambiguous, so here they are in more detail:

Step 1 – Trim the Bulk: I started with two months of beard growth. It’d be silly to try and take that all off with a safety razor. I used a beard trimmer to remove most of the hair on my face.

Step 2 – Use a Fresh Blade: I had been using my existing blade for a while to keep my neck and cheeks tidy. For a major job as this I decided to use a fresh blade.

Step 3 – Soak the Bowl & Brush: Soaking the brush makes sure all the hairs get nice and saturated with water. Soaking the bowl will help you make a nice warm lather. I soaked them both in hot water for about 5 minutes.

Step 4 – Prep the Face: I generally shave right out of the shower, and in my opinion that is the best time. But, for this video I didn’t take a shower before hand, so I soaked a towel in hot water and let it set on my face for 5 minutes to open up the pores and hair follicles.

Step 5 – Make the Lather: I made a "super lather" consisting of Proraso shaving cream and Col. Conk Glycerine shave soap. Watch for the nice peak so you know your lather is ready!

Step 6 – First Pass – With the Grain: The first pass should go with the grain on your face. I mixed up my hand signals on this one and the "against the grain" pass. Remember, don’t apply any pressure! The weight of the safety razor should be enough!

Step 7 – Second Pass – Across the Grain: The second pass should go across the grain on your face.

Step 8 – Third Pass – Against the Grain: The third pass should go against the grain. Remember, no pressure!

Step 9 – Fix Any Rough Spots: Apply more lather to any rough spots that might need a 4th going over. I had to go over my chin and upper lip a couple of more times.

Step 10 – Cold Water Rinse: Close up those pores with a splash of cold water!

Step 11 – Blot Dry: Don’t wipe your face dry, you’ll make it angry and irritated!

Step 12 – Aftershave Balm: Apply some aftershave balm or cream. Don’t use anything alcohol based, it’ll burn and make your face unhappy!

Step 13 – Success!: Baby Bottom Smooth (BBS) shave! Hooray!

Materials Used:

Razor: Edwin Jagger EJ89L

Blade: Israeli Personna

Brush: Edwin Jagger Best Badger Hair Brush

Cream : Proraso

Soap: Col. Conk Glycerine Soap

Aftershave: Neutrogena Razor Defense

Pat Buchanan’s "days as a political analyst at MSNBC have come to an end."

That’s what the political commentator and conservative lightning rod wrote in an essay on the American

Conservative’s website late Thursday.

"After 10 enjoyable years, I am departing," Buchanan wrote, "after an incessant clamor from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency, and dangerous."

MSNBC confirmed Buchanan’s departure in a tellingly brief statement: "After ten years, we’ve parted ways with Pat Buchanan. We wish him well."

Buchanan says he was "blacklisted" by the network after the Oct. 18 publication of "Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?" and several groups–including Color of Change, a group devoted to raising awareness of the concerns of black Americans–called for his firing, claiming the book offered a "white supremacist ideology."

MSNBC president Phil Griffin told reporters at a Television Critics Association panel last month that Buchanan had been suspended indefinitely, and that Buchanan’s future with the network was up in the air.

"I don’t think the ideas that he put forth are appropriate for national dialogue on MSNBC," Griffin said. "He won’t be coming back during the book tour."

Buchanan says the book tour was, in effect, proof his ideas were not racist or otherwise offensive.

"They are saying that a respected publisher, St. Martin’s, colluded with me to produce a racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic book, and CNN, Fox News, C-SPAN, Fox Business News, and the 150 radio shows on which I appeared failed to detect its evil and helped to promote a moral atrocity," Buchanan wrote. "If my book is racist and anti-Semitic, how did Sean Hannity, Erin Burnett, Judge Andrew Napolitano, Megyn Kelly, Lou Dobbs, and Ralph Nader miss that? How did Charles Payne, African-American host on Fox radio, who has interviewed me three times, fail to detect its racism? How did Michael Medved miss its anti-Semitism?"

Eric Deggans, a critic for the Tampa Bay Times, wondered on Friday what took MSNBC so long to formally ditch Buchanan.

"Buchanan’s departure is more about a failure of media outlets to police themselves," Deggans wrote. "If MSNBC had listened to complaints years ago, it wouldn’t have taken a massively embarrassing public campaign and targeted protest from advocacy groups to unseat a guy who has regularly tried to pass off prejudice as reasoned political commentary."

"He’s been making the same racially insensitive, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements for the past 50 years," Ari Rabin-Havt, executive vice president of Media Matters, told the Associated Press.

Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan called it "a refreshing move" in a post entitled "Bye Bye Pat Buchanan, You Old Racist."

Oddly, Buchanan’s announcement, published through his website’s Twitter feed, solicited just one reply. "Keep speaking the truth my friend," Twitter user @PapaHemmy wrote. "America needs you."

But many of Buchanan’s supporters could be found in the American Conservative’s comments section:

…Mr. Buchanan you are one of the few courageous men left who will stand up to the increasingly totalitarian behemoths who are trying their best to subjugate the citizens of this once great country into a cowering and [vile] heap of wage slaves, who do what they’re told and think what they’re told by their elites. And you have always done it with goodwill and civility. Certainly you are one of my heroes whose vision, advice and wisdom make you stand head and shoulders above this cesspool of mediocrity and craven cowardliness we live in today. Keep writing please and thanks for everything!

Another:

…Judge Andrew Napolitano and you silenced in the same week. Apparently, only milquetoast establishment political discussion is permitted on the public airwaves.

One railed against MSNBC in the Wall Street Journal:

…A conservative voice in a leftist arena undeservedly gives validation to a debate that looks more like an ambush. When Scarborough is not there, the others make a party, and Scarborough himself doesn’t appear to be much of a conservative; he may as well just say he’s joined the dark force.

"PB will be on FOX by Monday," another commenter added. "No one watches MSNBC anyway."

Other popular Yahoo! News stories:

• CNN cancels GOP debate after Romney and Paul drop out

• ‘Colbert Report’ production suspended ‘due to unforeseen circumstances’

• PETA defends controversial vegan ad: ‘The underlying message is a helpful one’

Certain people have an immense impact on your college career. Some say it’s a professor they had for a class who inspired their inevitable career path, others may claim that it’s the love of their life they found while out at a party one night. Maybe it’s the random roommate they had freshman year who turned out to become one of their best friends, or even the Orientation Leader assigned to them upon entering Florida State. There are certain people that touch our lives in ways we cannot begin to imagine; Orientation Leaders tend to do this on a daily basis for both students and families that are new on campus.

“Personally, an Orientation Leader is a beacon of what it truly means to be a true Seminole,” 2010 and 2011 Orientation Leader and FSU alum Garrett Schlichte said.

“[Orientation leaders] are students who are passionate about Florida State and want to share that excitement with new students and family members, seeking to open their eyes to the true spirit of our campus.”

Orientation Leaders (better known as “OLs”) are current students that possess a completely wide breadth of understanding of not only how FSU functions, but the institution’s history, the thousands of organizations that exist on campus, the traditions, and how a Seminole can take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that FSU has to offer.

“OLs are the first people an incoming freshman has real interaction with,” 2011 and 2012 Orientation Leader and FSU alum Harrison DuBosar said. “The fact that OLs are well versed in all campus activities creates an immediate ‘go to’ person for each incoming student to seek help. This does not end after orientation.”

The connection an Orientation Leader makes with each of their students is a unique bond that can last throughout college or even a lifetime.

“I still have students from years past communicate with me, seeking assistance for various issues,” DuBosar said.

A typical day for an OL is not so typical when you really break it down. Though it may be their job, these student participants create a whole new life for themselves for the duration of the summer semester.

“A regular day in the life of an OL includes early wake up calls, fantastic Suwannee meals and many opportunities to comfort students and frantic parents with regard to adjusting to this new life,” DuBosar said.

Orientation Leaders’ days tend to start bright and early, for most around 5:30 a.m., so that they are prepped and ready for the extremely lengthy day. Waking up residents by knocking on doors and cheering down the hallways and attending OL staff meetings follows suit. Then the day truly begins: academic and campus resource sessions, small group meetings with students or families, answering about a million questions, lunch breaks at the dining halls, then sessions, sessions, skits, and more informational sessions.

The end of their day entails nightly entertainment and then a curfew at 11 p.m.; but the intent is to be in bed by 1 a.m., this way OLs will be able to optimize their time for fun with students even after hours.

“On average an OL starts their day at 6 a.m. and ends at 11 p.m., but to be honest, it more likely ends at 1 a.m.,” Schlichte said. “This is because most OLs just want to engage with the new students each session, and some of the best conversations happen at midnight over a stuffed crust pizza.”

Though an extremely long and draining day, these individuals are always at the top of their game. OLs strive to be approachable and optimistic at all hours of the day. Getting the chance to share all of the little known facts of FSU along with personal experiences with over 6000 new students daily aids not only the incoming students, but it teaches each OL a little bit more about themselves.

Being an Orientation Leader also changes a way that a student perceives college as a whole. For Schlichte, not only did becoming an OL change his FSU experience entirely, but also his future.

“It taught me that my passion is in working with students who are transitioning into higher education and pushed me to pursue my master’s degree in higher education and student affairs,” Schlichte said.

The Orientation experience opens new doors for both incoming students and the OLs as well. This process engages students to take a leap of faith and explore all of the absolutely incredible opportunities that Florida State has to offer. OLs may be running around campus constantly clad in their garnet and gold striped polos, but they do this with the true Seminole spirit.

“What sums up OLs is that they spend each day living the dream,” Schlichte said.

The proof is in the trailers.

The South Korean television network that airs BBC's Sherlock advertises the show with trailers that pretty much depict it as a love story between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
