Tallahassee Officials Outraged Over Forbes’ Article
Forbes Magazine online article ranks Tallahassee as America’s 8th-most dangerous city.

Can the most livable city also be one of the most dangerous? That’s what a new Forbes magazine article is saying about Tallahassee.
"This is outlandish," Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones says. "It’s a slap in the face to this community."
Jones is one of many leaders angry at Forbes magazine.
Forbes released an online article listing Tallahassee as the country’s 8th most dangerous city.
This coming the same year Tallahassee was named the country’s "most livable city" by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Now bad press Jones says may soil its image.
"There is significant concern among our community leaders and as well as our businesses that real damage has been done."
Mayor John Marks says Forbes misused the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report data in its article.
"Those statistics simply say you should not use this information when talking about ranking cities."
Marks says Forbes also used crime data from Tallahassee’s entire metropolitin area. That he says includes Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla and Jefferson County.
"Some of the cities in this statistical area are at least 50 miles away."
Marks urges Tallahassee residents to read the article and voice their opinions to Forbes.

Tallahassee is a top 10 city, but not in crime. We’ve been named one of the most livable cities in the world, we’ve been proclaimed one of the most desirable places to do business, and we’re one of the least expensive and best places to retire in the U.S.
Several of the major flaws in this ludicrous interpretation by Forbes, includes evaluating Tallahassee by including the entire metropolitan statistical area, that includes four counties, 19 cities and towns that span from Chattahoochee to Monticello. If you look at the City of Tallahassee by itself, we average 8 homicides a year. Other cities have 8 a weekend.
People who live in Tallahassee and Leon County know this is simply not true, it is outrageous and it is ridiculous. This afternoon I took part in a conference call with local business, community and government leaders, all of whom are outraged and also concerned about the impact of this on line publication and how the rest of the country views our city.
I personally called the Forbes Executive Editor – Dan Bigman – this afternoon to express my outrage. During our conversation, he agreed to make changes that clarify that this online article referred to the MSA. Mr. Bigman agreed to also include comments on line that I am sending to him and clarified that this article would not be included in the print edition of Forbes Magazine. I hope that every person in our community will take this personally and to go online to Forbes Magazine and let them know this story does not accurately reflect our community or its citizens.

Based on the population of the greater Tallahassee area we have a much higher crime rate than the majority of metros in the country. The last 5-6 years the number of violent crimes in Leon County has gone up drastically. When I moved to Tallahassee in the middle 90s violent crimes were reported weekly not two and three per day. The Mayor is attempting damage control, as he should, but he can’t deny that our area isn’t a safe haven.

Was it over 5 ounces of pot? Or was it over years of prison time if they got caught selling pot, ecstasy and crack?

Q. We like crisp cookies, so I set out on a quest to find out what makes them crisp. One of the suggestions on a baking website was to use egg yolks instead of the whole egg. If the recipe calls for two eggs, would you use two egg yolks? What do you add to make up for the moisture the whites provide?

Most cookie recipes call for one egg, so you could use two yolks without much loss of moisture. But I think eggs may be the wrong culprit. While some baking sites do suggest using yolks only for crispness, many more disagree with that theory — with good reason. Egg whites generally give crispness and dryness to the final texture of baking goods. Egg yolks contain most of the egg’s fat, so they contribute richness and a softer, cakier texture.
Instead, I’d look at two other factors that are involved with crispness. The first is the sugar. Brown sugar is more moist, while white sugar causes dryness. So you want a recipe that has more white than brown sugar. A cookie that has all brown sugar is going to be softer after it’s baked.
Second, make sure you’re using butter instead of shortening. Butter makes cookies crisp while shortening makes them softer.

A not so exclusive, behind the scenes look at the creation of one of the NEW sections of the diorama layout.
This detached section measures about 12′ long X 34" wide and consists of 3 sheets of MDF on a plastic shelf base.
Scrap wood is used to form the base for the dunes, and tape is used to seal the seams where sand will be used.
This isn’t a start to finish "how-to" tutorial on diorama making (I’m certainly no expert) but it does give a good idea of how I do it.
