31 Things I’ve Apologized For

http://ift.tt/1xqd3sz

A quest to stop apologizing so much.

Women tend to apologize more frequently than men, a study in Psychological Science shows. Whether it's in lieu of an “excuse me” or something we deem more of an offense than men, it's a subtle, self-defeating habit.

To see if I could stop pardoning myself so much, I kept track of my apologies to family, strangers, and anyone else for a month (excluding the times I genuinely messed up and owed someone an apology).

Marvel’s “Ant-Man” Deftly Dodges Edgar Wright Issue At Comic-Con

http://ift.tt/1tbvt2d

Turns out its new director, Peyton Reed, is a bona fide geek — he’s been coming to Comic-Con since 1994.

SAN DIEGO — The upcoming Marvel Studios movie Ant-Man faced its biggest challenge yet — the 6,000-person Hall H crowd at Comic-Con during Marvel's hour-long panel on Saturday. The movie's filmmaking team chose to deftly dodge looming questions surrounding Ant-Man, rather than face them head on.

To be fair, the hard-core geeks packed into Hall H were likely more aware of the recent unrest with the project than general audiences: In late May, its original director Edgar Wright (The World's End) abruptly left the film after developing Ant-Man since at least 2006, with both Marvel and Wright citing “differences in their vision.”

What those differences are have never been addressed — and they weren't during the Ant-Man panel, either. In fact, even though Wright's test-reel footage for Ant-Man was screened at Marvel Studios' Comic-Con panel in 2012, his name was never mentioned at this one. The closest the panel ever got to addressing the issue was when moderator Chris Hardwick said about, and to, the new director, Peyton Reed (Bring It On), “If you had any question as to whether or not Peyton might be the right guy for this job — what number of San Diego Comic-Con is this for you, Peyton Reed?”

Reed's answer: It was his “20th anniversary visit to Comic-Con.” He further provided his geek bona fides by noting that he was a drummer in a punk band in the 1980s called Johnny Quest, and drew the fliers for their gigs himself — one of which was a rip-off of the Marvel Comics issue Avengers #1 featuring Reed as Ant-Man. The crowd laughed, and Feige and Reed looked visibly relieved. (Feige also noted that Reed didn't tell him any of this until after he'd landed the gig.)

“Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces” Makes You See “Fire Walk With Me” In A Different Way

http://ift.tt/1nKi9dl

David Lynch unveiled nearly 90 minutes of deleted and extended scenes from his 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me at a Los Angeles theater last night. It was intense and weird.

Walk Twin Pieces Peaks Missing Makes Fire Different Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces Makes You See Fire Walk With Me In A Different Way

CBS Home Entertainment

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, David Lynch's follow-up prequel to cult classic television series Twin Peaks, has always been an odd beast. It recounts the final seven days of the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose inexplicable and brutal murder is the impetus for the short-lived drama that riveted viewers when it aired between 1990 and 1991. It is also about the similarly brutal murder of Teresa Banks (Pamela Gidley), a woman killed a year before Laura in a similarly ritualistic manner whose death puts FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) on alert, following the disappearance of one of his colleagues investigating her murder.

One would expect that the film is a strict prequel, but it is not: Fire Walk With Me plays with time in a unique and nonlinear fashion, making it both prequel and sequel in an odd, contradictory sense. Like Twin Peaks, it is both dreamy and nightmarish, making the conflation of time make sense slightly more. There are visions and sigils, haunted rings and groves of trees, whirring ceiling fans and rustling curtains. The film itself is cryptic and strange, embracing a full-tilt Lynchian mode that the director successfully curtailed in the ethereal Mulholland Drive. Fire Walk With Me is about dreams, desire, and death. It is about answers and more questions. And it is also an unflinching look at the horrors of incest.

The completed film, released in 1992, was a box office bomb, receiving widespread loathing from the critics; it was booed at Cannes when it premiered at the film festival. Fire Walk With Me is an odd curio: It's a film that attracts and repulses at the same time, its emphasis on evoking the oddness of Twin Peaks but with a sharper, more graphic edge that isn't sanded down at all, thanks to the absence of almost the entire cast. Kyle MacLachlan, who played the intrepid Cooper in the show, barely appeared in the film. The quirky denizens of the Washington border town — whose own thwarted passions and crimes provide a sharp narrative spine to the show — are largely shoved into the background, as the film focuses more on Laura's home life and those involved in her murder. The final week of Laura's life — rendered impressively by Lee, whose riveting performance is criminally overlooked here — is a mix of pleasure and pain, a sad end to a tortured life as she comes face to face with the man who had abused her and raped her for so many years: her father, Leland Palmer (Ray Wise), in the guise of the malevolent BOB.

David Lynch offers his opening remarks at the world premiere of Twin Peaks: Missing Pieces at the Vista Theater on July 16 in Los Angeles.

It’s called the “Mandela Effect,” and a lot of people think it’s proof of an alternate universe.

The Mandela Effect is a theory put forth by writer and “paranormal consultant” Fiona Broome that shared false memories are in fact glimpses into parallel worlds with different timelines.

Broome says that the origin of her theory came out of a discussion about whether or not Nelson Mandela died in prison. Naturally, this happened backstage at Dragon*Con.

1. Gojira, Godzilla's Japanese name, is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for gorilla (gorira) and whale (kujira,) the original basis for his design.

2. Despite the Godzilla series' campy reputation, the first movie was a straightforward horror movie, as Godzilla was a clear metaphor for the atomic bomb.

3. The original 1954 Godzilla, Gojira, was released only nine years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

4. Godzilla's skin was intentionally reminiscent of the keloid scar tissue on many survivors of the bombings.

5. Godzilla's attack on a fishing boat at the beginning of the original 1954 movie was inspired by a real life event. Less than eight months before the movie's release, a tuna fishing boat drifted into fallout from an American atomic H-bomb test, subjecting the crew to severe radiation poisoning.

37 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Marvel Comics

http://ift.tt/1jn3iuj

It’s really such a shame Michael Jackson never got a chance to play Spider-Man.

Things Probably Marvel Know Dont Comics About 37 Things You Probably Dont Know About Marvel Comics

Marvel

1. Hulk was originally grey when he was introduced, but became green to compensate for poor color separations used to print comics in the '60s.

2. Stan Lee put a hyphen in Spider-Man's name so it would look different from Superman in print.

3. Marvel Comics and DC Comics have co-owned the trademark for the phrase “super hero” since 1981. They pursued this action because the toy company Mego, which made licensed toys of DC characters, had beat them to it. Mego gave up the trademark when the two companies threatened legal action.

4. Wolverine was originally intended to be a genetically mutated wolverine rather than a human mutant. Stan Lee himself vetoed the idea.

5. Marvel had a rule in the mid-'70s that Wolverine did not have arm hair while in costume, but could have arm hair when he was in regular clothing.

6. Marvel published the first issue of their adaptation of Star Wars in March 1977 with a July cover date, about two months before the movie was released in theaters.

Things Probably Marvel Know Dont Comics About 37 Things You Probably Dont Know About Marvel Comics

Marvel/Lucasfilm

7. Bill Sarnoff, the head of DC Comics' parent company Warner Communications, approached Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter in 1984 about licensing the publishing rights to the entire DC Universe. Sarnoff figured that Marvel, who dominated the market at the time, were better suited to making successful comics featuring Batman, Superman, and the Justice League. Marvel's publisher at the time, Jim Galton, declined Sarnoff's offer, thinking that those comics weren't selling well because the characters weren't very good.

8. Marvel Comics founder Martin Goodman was meant to be aboard the Hindenberg on the day the ship famously crashed, but changed his travel plans at the last minute.

9. Martin Goodman tried to talk Stan Lee and Steve Ditko out of introducing Spider-Man because he insisted that kids hate spiders.

10. Neal Tennant, the lead singer of the Pet Shop Boys, was an editor at Marvel's U.K. office in the late '70s.

11. Jim Shooter, Marvel's editor-in-chief in the '80s, bought the idea for Spider-Man's black costume from a fan for $ 220, and gave the fan a shot at writing the comic, though that didn't work out. The black costume was introduced as an alien “symbiotic” and eventually became one of Spider-Man's most famous villains, Venom.
