Why “R.I.P.D.” Should Be The Next Beloved Cult Classic

http://99thingsyouwishyouknew.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/1deef__enhanced-buzz-22932-1388084023-2.jpg

The movie was a big bomb this summer, but if you actually give it a chance, the Jeff Bridges–Ryan Reynolds flick is a ton of fun. And, better than Man of Steel .

Should R.I.P.D. Next Cult Classic Beloved Why R.I.P.D. Should Be The Next Beloved Cult Classic

Universal

Universal Pictures decided way before R.I.P.D. hit theaters in mid-July that the movie was destined to fail; it had already pushed it back several times from its original January 2012 release date. The studio stripped the movie adaptation of Peter M. Lenkov’s Rest in Peace Department comic of nearly all of its marketing budget; at $ 130 million for production alone, it was already going to take a big write-down. That more or less set the narrative: R.I.P.D. was garbage, the studio was ashamed of it, and moviegoers shouldn't bother seeking it out. It ended up taking in just $ 33 million in the U.S. and $ 78 million worldwide.

It is ludicrous to call anything done to those in the über-first world of Hollywood an “injustice,” but, on such a sliding scale, the treatment of R.I.P.D. certainly qualifies as unfortunate mistreatment.

Summer 2013 was a test case for Hollywood studios that now make a large majority of their profits off of expensive, blockbuster action films. There were a couple big hits within the Iron Man and Fast & Furious franchises, but the season mostly lacked the crazy-anticipated, years-in-the-making culminations like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises that guarantee billions in box office returns. Thus, studios were forced to try to manufacture new, lucrative features, and in doing so, tested just how eager the moviegoing public was to pay high prices for broadly sketched characters and big, computerized explosions.

There were some successes: Man of Steel, World War Z, and Pacific Rim (which fell flat stateside, but scored $ 300 million abroad) all were considered wins for the studios, even if they weren't huge critical favorites. But there were also several painful flops — The Lone Ranger was a bloated mess that was derided as a bad Western version of Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean; and the combination of M. Night Shyamalan and Will and Jaden Smith made After Earth a gigantic punchline when it fell face-first.

R.I.P.D., on the other hand, was quietly pronounced DOA, kicked around for a few days, and then promptly forgotten. But it deserved better.

The film features Ryan Reynolds as Nick, a morally troubled Boston cop. When he's gunned down by his partner Bobby (Kevin Bacon), he's offered a chance at salvation: Instead of facing eternal judgment, he can join an underworld police corps (the cleverly titled Rest in Peace Department), where he can roam the earth…appearing to living humans as an old Asian man. He begrudgingly accepts, and is partnered up with a foul-mouthed sheriff from the Old West named Roy, played by Jeff Bridges, who inhabits the physical perfection of real-life Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Marisa Miller.

The two set off to patrol troublemaking escaped spirits called Deados, while Nick tries to cope with missing his wife and the consequences of the robbery that turned the crooked Bobby against him. Sure, it's ridiculous, and yes, it was criticized for being similar to the plot of Men in Black (a recently revived franchise that benefits from the grandfathered glow of '90s nostalgia). But then again, Iron Man's Tony Stark is basically a suave Steve Jobs in a fleet of custom-built flying suits, and director Zack Snyder made Superman an alien Jesus figure in Man of Steel.

The first mistake Universal made with R.I.P.D. was assuming that it could penetrate the perplexing world of fanboy entertainment; comic book fans take the big-screen adaptations of characters and stories that they've cherished for years on paper deadly seriously, no matter how unbelievable they may seem.

And that's unfair and unfortunate, because R.I.P.D., even more so than the Iron Man franchise and the new Superman, can be appreciated on several different levels. Not all of them may have been purposely engineered, but that's the beauty of film: Its ownership is transferred from director to audience the moment it hits the screen.

As ushered in by Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, blockbuster films have become not just serious business, but serious entertainment. Joss Whedon injected some laughs into The Avengers and Robert Downey Jr. has made Tony Stark a charming cad, but “gritty reboot” has become the exhausted logline on summer movies over the past half-decade. World War Z was a grim apocalyptic tale, despite Brad Pitt's long locks and trackstar zombies, while not even Simon Pegg could save J.J. Abrams' Star Trek into Darkness from becoming “mysterious” and self-important to the point of parody.

The plot of R.I.P.D., on the other hand, is an intentionally silly version of those other comic book adaptations. A gold pendant (which looks like it came from Legends of the Hidden Temple) that Nick and Bobby steal from a drug bust (which is the sin that forces Nick into underworld police service) is actually an ancient artifact that will help open the gate that keeps the demons off of this planet; Nick and Roy have to stop Bobby — who (surprise!) is a Deado — from raising hell on Earth. As in every blockbuster, the planet is in peril, and only our heroes can save it.

Still, R.I.P.D. is the absolute opposite of the navel-gazing, dark-paletted destruction porn meant to stroke the egos of sensitive fanboys. It is kitschy, preposterous, and well aware that it exists in a bizarro world; there is a giddiness about much of its ludicrousness, which includes a shape-shifting demon that looks like Fat Bastard from Austin Powers 2 (played by Devin Ratray, aka Buzz from Home Alone!) who climbs up buildings with his ass hanging out.

It seems like director Robert Schwentke had to know that so much of what he was committing to digital film was absurd because his characters admit as much.

And Jeff Bridges gives a performance that is one part Lebowski, one part True Grit's Rooster Cogburn, and one part What the fuck? With the Oscar pressure obviously off his back (after winning in 2010 for Crazy Heart), Bridges just dives into the part of a stubborn 1800s Western lawman, concocting some sort of off-brand drawl that spews from his lips that are otherwise packed with acid-tinged chewing tobacco. He twirls his thick gray mustache and spins stories about his human corpse being skull-fucked by coyotes; he is extra revoltingly sloppy as he gleefully stuffs his gullet full of Indian food, because cumin and similar traditional spices inexplicably draw the Deados out of their human form.

Bacon also seems to be reveling in the outrageousness of the material, with his thick Boston accent and smarm-drenched performance. He's always made for an especially creepy heel, and his double-crossing Boston detective in R.I.P.D. may be the overlooked summit on that mountain of asshole acting.

Meanwhile, Mary-Louise Parker makes the most out of her police administrator role, playing it with a droll sexiness that's fitting, considering her uniform looks like the product of a go-go dancer and dominatrix teaming up to outfit a traffic warden.

Admittedly, Reynolds looks sort of miserable throughout the film, but that's the straight man character, who, after all, was just murdered. He also delivers incredulousness with surprising comedic honesty.

These sort of all-in performances are a gift in the summer-event movie genre, injecting some much-need personality into a season of wooden characters. If the screenplay offers a clunky story, it compensates with some solid quips and one-liners, avoiding the exposition-filled exchanges that beat audiences over the head with complicated details.

You'd be hard-pressed to find another blockbuster film that has a line like this: “You are just going to have to learn to sit on your regret and pain until it becomes a dull and persistent ache — the way I do it, the way a man does it,” as Bridges utters in the middle of the second act.

In the last 100 years, women have been able to break away from the stereotypes of domesticity and redefine what women are capable of. The women of today are consistently forging their own path instead of following that of men. In what used to be predominantly a man’s world, women are now reigning supreme. Despite women’s power on society, female presence in the world of technology is definitely lacking. The stereotype still remains that only men are willing and able to work in the field, lead by Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. This notion is likely to change too, as women are beginning to educate one another on the possibilities of working in cyber-space as well as becoming leaders in the industry.

The first step is to educate women and bring awareness about the endless possibilities in the technology industry. For generations, the notion that women are not interested in mathematics and the sciences has remained constant, and the organization Girls Who Code is trying to challenge that idea. The organization is focusing on educating women in low-income areas and allowing them to succeed in an area that is in dire need of a female presence. However, the hardest task is not creating job opportunities, but eliminating the stereotypes held by many for so long. Women today must forge ahead in the hopes of creating a world of technology where they are taken seriously as both collaborators and innovators.

The second step is to have a strong female presence in major Internet companies in order to show both women’s capabilities as well as provide role models for those aspiring to work in the industry. Recently, The Daily Beast released the Digital Power Index, a list of the 100 most influential people in the technology sector. Out of those 100, only seven were women. Not only is it possible, but also necessary to increase the number of women who play an active role in the age of computers, as it will have lasting effects on society. Despite this setback, two women are taking command of the Twitterverse: Katie Jacobs Stanton and Chloe Sladden. Stanton is in charge of the company’s international expansion, and is ranked No. 56 on Forbes’ list of the most powerful women. Since graduating from Colombia, her main focus has been technology and how it can be used as a beneficial tool in the world of politics. Having been at the company since July 2010, her job has centered on Twitter’s role in the Arab Spring, and providing a real outlet for freedom of expression. The second female power player of Twitter is Sladden, director of media partnerships. She is always looking for new ways for Twitter to collaborate with television, celebrities or both. Originally working at a literary agency, she left and entered a world she viewed as the future: interactive television.

Women in the workforce continue to make themselves known, as both legitimate competition for men as well as leaving a lasting imprint on society. In the world of technology, the presence of women is severely lacking, due to long-held stereotypes about women working in the male dominated sector, leading to an absence of females who can be an example for others. Girls Who Code is an organization that focuses on educating young women about coding, and creating opportunities for them to enter the technology workforce. Females continue to persevere to create a future in which women are considered visionaries in the Internet age.

I couldn’t find this on Youtube anywhere so I decided to upload it. The 20 greatest hits from Creedence Clearwater Revival. Good ole CCR. I also added two more songs at the end that I felt should have been on the album. They are Born on the Bayou and The Midnight Special.

Chronicle, Vol. 1, also known as Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits, is a compilation album by American swamp rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, released in January 1976 by Fantasy Records, it was released the same time as the single release of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (see 1976 in music). Compared to the two previously released Creedence Gold compilations, Chronicle Vol. 1 features all of the group’s charted hits. It is the best-selling album in the Creedence catalog, making 8x Multi-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Chronicle, Vol. 1 is a singles collection with 13 A-sides and 7 B-sides.

QUESTION: Why should I consider LinkedIn for my business needs?

Answer: Lately, it seems that all of the social media marketing attention is on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other platforms of note. I’ve not heard a lot of discussion about people using LinkedIn as an effective tool for their business. Yet, I have more than 500 connections and many of my connections have more than 500 connections. What do we do with all of those connections?

First of all, one must consider it as a professional platform rather than a social platform. More importantly, it can be viewed as a virtual networking site that could possibly save you time and money in making those strategic connections that could land you the next deal, help you to find the best qualified employee or assist you in finding a network of support for your specific industry. Finally, LinkedIn can be used as an effective tool in reaching the correct people that will help you take your small business global.

Here are some interesting facts about LinkedIn, provided by bluerisemedia.com:

• 101 million members worldwide

• 47.2 percent from North America, 23 percent from Europe

• 82 percent of consumers trust LinkedIn compared with 23 percent for Facebook

• LinkedIn users are 59 percent female

• Used by 69 of the top 100 Fortune 500 companies

• 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies hire through LinkedIn

Secondly, one should consider how to use it smartly. Develop your profile with authentic content and use a professional head shot. Be serious about who you connect with and refer. Don’t connect with someone hoping to make a sale immediately. You still must work on developing a relationship and conversation with a person just as you would in any face-to-face networking.

Then, identify people in your community and your sphere of influence that you believe would be interesting to meet with. Get connected with them and figure out ways to share some information. Just don’t leave it at “I’d like to add you to my network.” Personalize your message and let them know why you would like to connect with them. Just this last week, I’ve had two business colleagues tell me that they had used LinkedIn to connect with other people in their industry and have already met with them to discuss business opportunities.

Finally, LinkedIn is a perfect way to leverage your personal brand power and your company brand power. It will help you to open doors to new opportunities.

Beth Gitlin is director of the Women’s Business Center at Florida Tech and an adjunct professor in the university’s School of Business. Visit wbc.fit.edu or call 321-674-7007 for more information.

I always wondered how stone spheres are made, so this is a series of 4 demonstration photos I took at the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in Phoenix last week. The second image of these four shows a diagram of a grinding and polishing machine. Here is a link to a great page for finding museums, groups, and sightseeing for Arizona rockhounds and travelers.

“Accept that everyone’s family is dysfunctional in some way, shape or form and that you’re not going to change it," Ferretti said. "So it’s not your job to get in there and fix the conflict between your brother and your sister, whoever it might be.”

A typical day during the holidays tends to be anything but typical: disrupted sleep, frantic shopping, stretched funds, extended time with dysfunctional families, and parties laden with fatty foods and alcohol.

The result: more stress.

A 2008 poll by the American Psychological Association showed that eight of 10 Americans expected to experience holiday stress, and a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll last year found that 44 percent expected more stress because of economic conditions, an increase over the year before.

“People get out of their routines over the holidays,” said Tony Ferretti, a Melbourne psychologist whose specialty is relationship counseling. “So they’re not exercising like they used to.

They’re eating everything in sight. They’re drinking too much. They’re not sleeping normal hours. So they’re vulnerable to being stressed out.”

Some people feel pressured to create a perfect holiday experience. Others are reminded of lost loved ones. And unresolved family issues tend to fray the edges of inevitable holiday gatherings.

“Accept that everyone’s family is dysfunctional in some way, shape or form and that you’re not going to change it," Ferretti said. "So it’s not your job to get in there and fix the conflict between your brother and your sister, whoever it might be.”

Set boundaries and allow yourself time to get away, whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, an outing with your spouse or a nap behind closed doors, he suggests. Holidays may not be the best time to work out family conflicts.

“Maybe sometime in January, you might want to have that conversation, or you might want to write that letter,” he says. “I think letters can be very powerful, even if you don’t send it.”

Forgive transgressors and move on, he said.

With a partner or spouse, share traditions and minimize conflict, Ferretti suggested.

“It’s a stressful time when you’re deciding how much money to spend and finances are tight,” he says. “It’s all about working together as a team and compromising.”

Physical effects

Ferretti and others advocate exercise to deal with stress, which manifests itself physically as well as mentally.

.

Stress busters

Here are some of Melbourne psychologist Tony Ferretti’s tips for coping with holiday stress. “The past is history, the future a mystery, the present a gift,” he says.

Maintain your schedule.

Manage your time.

Get enough rest.

Avoid negative habits.

Live in the here and now.

Say no when you need to.

Seek the support of family and friends.

Have realistic expectations.

“A lot of us tend to take our stress right in the chest,” says Viera Wellness’ Demetri Kitsopoulos, a massage therapist and wellness consultant. “So with tight chest muscles combined with work ergonomics — we’re slumped over in front of computers in offices — we’re already predisposed to being tight here.”

Stretching is important, he said. Deep breathing, along with meditation or prayer, can help calm the mind. And walking and other exercise can help, too.

“You can’t insult Grandmother by not indulging in whatever she made … we indulge a little bit,” Kitsopoulos said. “But the need to rush back to the gym is also a bit premature. Take it slow and steady, especially with all the drama of the holidays.”

The therapeutic massages he gives to Dr. Edward Mallory, an emergency-room physician at Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge, help the doctor deal with an intensely stressful job and resulting discomfort in his shoulders and back.

“I just feel that a lot of stress has been relieved, because I had an hour with him, and he’s very good,” Mallory said.

He exercises a lot, enjoys time with his kids in Tampa on days off, and spends a few minutes in contemplation after coming home to his beachfront condo after the night shift.

“I also will just sit out on the balcony and listen to the water,” Mallory said.

It’s important to get out of the fluorescent lights of the office and the shopping malls, Kitsopoulos said.

“Connect with nature. It’s absolutely necessary.”

To reduce anxiety, he also recommends clearing clutter and organizing your space before gift-giving time and arriving 30 minutes early for engagements.

Tasty temptations

Food is a holiday pleasure, but it can become a stress monster, whether people don’t eat well or eat too much.

The temptations of holiday treats can lead to overeating, said nutritionist Kristine Van Workum of Brevard Nutrition in Indialantic. Or people gorge themselves after not eating enough.

“People get so involved with everything that’s going on, or they tend to caretake for other people, or want to cook for everything … they end up going too long without eating,” said Van Workum, president of the Space Coast Dietetic Association.

Planning helps, as well as making it a priority to eat regular, balanced meals — every three to five hours for most people. Try drinking water if you want to snack; you may just be thirsty.

She works with clients to help them identify whether they are engaged in emotional eating — when the body isn’t hungry — from stress, boredom, fatigue, sadness or happiness.

“Think of meals as at least three different food groups,” she said.

Cookies, by the way, are not a food group. But if you want to snack, balance the cookie with a glass of low-fat milk or a piece of fruit, she said.

While cooking holiday meals or baking, look for low-fat ingredients, such as applesauce or Greek yogurt, as alternatives, she suggested. She regularly shares such recipes on Brevard Nutrition’s Facebook page.

“Don’t deprive yourself,” Van Workum said. “If your goal is to lose weight, you might want to adapt your goal and just work on maintaining your weight during the holidays.”

Giving thanks

Remember the things that are important, Kitsopoulos recommends.

He knows something about stress. Before he became a massage therapist, he left a high-pressure job in movie visual effects after a health scare.

He’s learned to live in the present, let the past go and be thankful.

“In a time when we are labeled as consumers, we should actually be grateful for what we’ve got,” he said. “Especially in this economy, people are freaking out about job loss and what they don’t have. What you do have is your health, and if you’re sharing that with friends and family, whether you like them or not,” he chuckled, “you’re still sharing an experience that a lot of people don’t have, so it’s something to be

grateful for that.”

There is more to the season than giving presents and excessive eating

According to any shopping store, the holidays begin as early as November. Thanksgiving decorations are already going on sale before the turkey is out of the oven. Thursday should be thrown in the Black Friday mix since apparently the event begins the night before the actual day. By the first week of December, Santa is already getting suited up for his photoshoot with thousands of children.

Each year this whole situation tends to be getting more extreme—then comes the moment when the youngest family member comes to the realization that Mr. Claus is not real. Mom and dad no longer have to hide the presents, take a bite of the cookies or leave out food for Santa’s reindeers. When things couldn’t get worse, your mom hands you the list of family members you have to get gifts for because she is running out of time. This is what we come home to after a grueling week of finals and papers.

This is the moment when I think to myself, “What happened to the joys of the holidays?” At this point, the only thing that could lift my spirits is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat.

So how does one avoid the holiday blues under these circumstances? My first thought is to throw a dramatic tantrum and boycott anything holiday-oriented. That changed when I remembered all the food I will be missing out on. So, I figured the best way to go about this is to go back to the basics.

The holidays are about enjoying the company of our friends and family and celebrating the end to another wonderful year. Even though some artists, who will remain nameless, butcher the classic holiday songs, everyone always enjoys listening to holiday music. Making a CD of your favorite holiday music is always a good item to have and give to friends. That list of gifts your mom gave you can be easily taken care of without the stress of entering the mall.

Instead of buying someone another pair of slippers or a beach bag, opt for something more personal like photographs. Grandparents especially love photographs of their grandchildren so they can show off to all of their friends. For the young family members, hiding elves around the house is entertaining and time consuming. Once your mom’s to-do list is taken care of, it is time to get into the real reason for the season—the holidays are a perfect opportunity to give back to the community.

There are endless charities and organizations that distribute toys and meals to families who are struggling to afford one gift for their child. Seeing those kid’s faces when they see Santa with a gift in his hands erases your memory of the trips to the mall, the rolled eyes and the frustration of the holidays.

The holidays should not be about the amount of inflatables we can stick on our lawns or the height of our trees. At the end of the day, after all of the perfectly wrapped gifts are ripped apart, the love in the room is the best gift of all.

The 16 Best New Television Shows Of 2013

http://99thingsyouwishyouknew.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/ebfb8__enhanced-buzz-2241-1387552188-0.jpg

Yes, returning shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Good Wife, Borgen, Parenthood , and others were aces this year. But this is all about the newcomers.

Bates Motel (A&E)

Television Shows Best 2013 The 16 Best New Television Shows Of 2013

The story of Norman Bates — recounted in Alfred Hitchcock's jangling Psycho — is only too familiar to most people. But under the watchful eye of executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, the Twin Peaks-esque Bates Motel offers a fresh look at Norman's formative years (despite the fact that the series is set in the present day and in a different location), including his relationship with his overbearing, quixotic mother, Norma (a stellar Vera Farmiga) after they purchase a run-down motel on the Oregon coastline and discover that their new sleepy town holds all manner of deadly secrets. As Norman and Norma, Freddie Highmore and Farmiga are riveting to watch, their damaged psyches threatening to erupt into violence at any moment. The result is an eerie and off-kilter drama about the things that bind us.

A&E

The Bletchley Circle (PBS)

Television Shows Best 2013 The 16 Best New Television Shows Of 2013

This three-episode British import — about a quartet of women who worked as codebreakers at Bletchley Park during World War II and reunite years later in order to entrap a serial killer when his pattern emerges — was a taut, thrilling chase as well as a nuanced portrait of the changing role of women in the 1950s, as each of the ladies struggles with a life of mundanity after playing such a pivotal role in the war. No surprise that another go-around is on tap for the amateur sleuths; The Bletchley Circle was downright gripping.

ITV

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)

Television Shows Best 2013 The 16 Best New Television Shows Of 2013

From creators Mike Schur and Dan Goor (Parks and Recreation) comes this workplace comedy about a police precinct in Brooklyn with a consistently great comedic ensemble (Andre Braugher's Captain Ray Holt and Chelsea Peretti's caustic Gina Linetti already standouts). Plus, any comedy that embraces diversity yet doesn't reduce its characters to stereotypes (no sassy Latinas here!) deserves to be celebrated. Deadpan funny.

Fox

Hannibal (NBC)

Television Shows Best 2013 The 16 Best New Television Shows Of 2013

Beautifully grotesque or grotesquely beautiful? Hannibal — inspired by the Thomas Harris novel Red Dragon and adapted by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) — is both, bringing some of the most disturbingly gorgeous sequences on television. As the titular doctor, Mads Mikkelsen is appropriately roguish and dangerous, a cunning serial killer with an appetite for destruction. Throw in Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, and Caroline Dhavernas (plus a slew of worthy supporting actors and guest stars) and you have the makings of a blood-curdling drama that will give you the most breathtaking nightmares you've ever had.
