I wrote a tutorial about how to take water drop macro photos a while ago, and was recently asked to illustrate it with some actual water drop photos. In the tutorial I wrote about the science behind the effects as well as the art of the macro composition.

I like how this shot demonstrates the science of water drops forming a lens and refracting the images behind them. You can clearly see the white flower and the red flower appearing upside down and backwards inside the drop compared to the background. I also like the bokeh and how you can see the flowers both in the drops and behind the drops, but the focus is such that the background does not distract from the main element — the drops.

I also mention in the tutorial that the normal rules of good composition also apply to macro shots, and that they can dramatically change in the miniature world with very slight adjustments of camera angle. I like that this one has two-thirds white and one-third red — all contrasted on a nice blue.

At any rate, if anyone has not seen the tutorial – I’ll include it below.
