How to fake a studio

Every wanted to have your own photo studio? Maybe you already have but just don’t know it yet.

Here’s how to fake one, MacGyver Style.

First you will need a seamless background and black will work best, since you will have a very hard time keeping crests and seams out of the photo. The closest thing I was able to find was a dark blue duvet cover. Why is that good enough? Because you will be controlling your light using flashes. As long as the light doesn’t fall on the cloth, you’re golden.

The duvet is mounted on the right hand side into a speaker stand, on the left hand side, velcro strapped to stairs and to keep it as straight as possible I finished it off with… duct tape holding the duvet from the ceiling. Hey, I told you it’s MacGyver style.

The Top flash (1/8th power) is hanging from a microphone stand, attached with bongo-ties. You will notice that the top flash has a piece of paper (we call these a ‘gobo’) attached to it. That was done to keep the light from falling onto the duvet.

The right flash (1/16th power) was gelled and set up as close to the wall as possible. It also had a gobo to prevent light spill.

The light reflector didn’t really do much but just in case you’re wondering, it’s a white foam board bought at an arts store.

The candles on the floor were used as foot markers.

The camera was shooting at 55m, so it had to be on the other side of the room. Hint: if you can, hook up your DSLR to a laptop and use remote shooting. It’s much easier to view results on a laptop screen, that running behind the camera every time.
