In the aftermath of the Boston attacks, take some time to sit and consider your own life: realize for a moment how precious it is. Take some time to plan what your goals are, and how you might reach them. For, as Americans, we’ve only just realized what Israelis already know: each second in our lives is precious, and it’s up to us to use them well.

Today, more than ever, Israel and the United States understand one another. These two democracies –which share profound respect for freedom, for human rights and dignity, these two nations who lead the world in science and technology, these firm allies – are united in their knowledge of terror, as well.

As Israelis were ending their Memorial Day, which saw 92 deaths in the past 12 months added to the tally of over 26,000 Israelis killed since records began, we in the United States endured our own terrorist attacks in Boston.

“My teacher told me about his aunt and cousin who were shot as they drove past an Arab village,” my daughter told me that night over dinner, describing her Jewish school’s Memorial Day observances. “My teacher described coming under fire as he patrolled a border one night,” one son told me. “Everyone in Israel knows someone who has died,” his younger brother told me.

Israelis of all backgrounds have long been united by the attacks they endure, attacks meant to terrorize and maim, to make them give up and leave their homes. Yet the more Israel’s enemies try to weaken it, the stronger the Jewish state seems to become. Facing terror that’s meant to destroy its citizens’ morale, Israel has managed to lead in international rankings of happiness. Terror meant to destroy Israel’s economy and infrastructure somehow has failed to prevent Israel from emerging as a first-world economy, recently ranked as the best place on earth to start a high-tech firm.

Clearly, Israel has learned some lessons that we in the United States need today. As we wake up to the day after our attacks, facing questions and looking for those responsible for the Boston bombings, comforting our many wounded and burying our dead, what lessons does Israel have to impart?

As Americans face the aftermath of the horrific terrorist attack in Boston, Israel is observing its Independence Day. This festive occasion each year comes the day after Memorial Day. Each year, Israelis first spend a solemn day remembering their many dead. Whole families visit cemeteries to pay their respects at the graves of loved ones who were killed. The entire country comes to a standstill to observe two minutes of total, profound silence the length and breadth of the country.

Then, as the day ends, Independence Day begins. This is a happy occasion, but coming as it does on the heels of intense mourning, its happiness is tempered. Amidst this juxtaposition, Israelis have a unique view of Independence Day and the freedoms having their own country grants. It’s a freedom that is heavily purchased; it’s a happiness that is mindful of the heavy price the country has paid, and continues to pay, as its enemies try to weaken and destroy it. Remembering the many sacrifices that have been made to create and maintain the Jewish state seems to make Israelis more determined to infuse their lives – both personally and nationally – with purpose.

Israelis know that freedom has come at high cost, and they’re determined not to waste a drop of it.

Other nations, including the United States, have been the beneficiaries of Israelis’ desire to channel their national tragedies into productive, positive ways to help others. In fact, the emergency doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital who are treating the wounded from the Boston Marathon were trained by Israeli doctors a few years ago in setting up a disaster relief team for just this scenario. Other innovations that have come out of Israel as a result of challenges facing the Jewish state include drip irrigation, water desalinization, emergency bandages that stop hemorrhaging, cutting-edge surgical techniques, advanced medical training programs for foreign doctors from poor countries, and the use of clowns in hospitals to help calm children.

Perhaps that’s the source of their high happiness rankings, of their world-class economy and research sector. Israelis seem to know that freedom has come at high cost, and they’re determined not to waste a drop of it, planning and using their resources instead to achieve real, valuable goals.

In the midst of our own tragedy, how can we learn from Israel? How can we internalize their strength in the face of horrific attack?

— 1. Feel the pain personally. When we empathize with other people’s pain, it helps us feel more connected with others, more human.

I saw this in my own reaction to the bombings. I went to college in Boston, and it will always be “my” city. When I heard of the bombings, I thought of a college friend who was running in the marathon. It made the connection seem so immediate, and I thought of Israel – where everyone knows someone in the area each time there’s an attack. This sort of connectivity binds us together and helps ensure we’re sensitive to other people’s pain.

— 2. Find ways to help. Reaching out to others with aid is another way to help and also to feel connected with our fellows who are in pain. This can take the form of personal aid – an example from inside Israel is the practice in recent years of citizens from all over Israel to drive down to the besieged town of Sderot, which has been bombed incessantly in recent years, to do their shopping.

Another way to aid others experiencing tragedy is to pray on their behalf. One common practice is to recite Psalms in aid of a sick or injured person. Not only does this lend strength to the victims, it helps empower us and our families too, as we cast about for ways to help.

— 3. Do good in memory of the victims. What can we do for the victims who died in the Boston attacks? Again, the example of Israel can help. There, it’s common to take on a specific obligation – for instance deciding to study a Jewish text in the memory of one who has died, taking on the performance of a new Jewish ritual, or pledging charity. Doing so elevates the memory of those who have died, and helps us spread goodness in their names.

Click here to receive Aish.com’s free weekly email.

— 4. Answer despair with hope. The Jewish prayer that’s commonly said when disasters strike is brief:

“Blessed is the faithful Judge.” It reminds us that God is in charge of the world, that He has designed it with a purpose. Even horrific events – even occasions that baffle us and leave us wounded – have an ultimate purpose. Like the Jewish mourner’s prayer, which praises God and doesn’t mention death, Jewish responses to tragedy contain a seed of hope.

They remind us that even our darkest moments can lead us to become better people. Like the citizens of Israel who tie their Independence Day celebrations to their solemn Memorial Day events, we too can ask ourselves what we can do in the face of tragedy. We too can think deeply about our response: we too can try to live better – to build a better community, to lead more deeply-considered lives – as a way to honor those who died.

— 5. Don’t take life for granted.

…..item 3)… ‘These runners just finished and now they don’t have legs’: Witnesses recount war zone at end of Boston Marathon as bombs left race course littered with limbs of 25-30 people …

… Mail Online – Daily Mail … http://ift.tt/W9yHV7

… Unimaginable horror as victims with missing limbs are transported away

… Surgeons battling wounds usually only seen in combat

… Doctor who ran to the scene: ‘It was like a war zone’

… Massachusetts General Hospital: ‘Several amputations’ performed

… Ten of the victims are feared to have lost limbs

… Two brothers each lost a leg, from the knee down in the blast

PUBLISHED: 15:28 EST, 15 April 2013 | UPDATED: 11:06 EST, 16 April 2013

Witnesses have described how twin bomb blasts turned the 26th mile of the Boston Marathon into a war zone, littering the final stretch of the race with disembodied limbs, wounded runners who lost their legs, and a lone shoe with flesh still in it.

Surgeons spoke about operating theaters that looked like battlefield hospitals as 140 injured victims poured into the city’s hospital’s – many with wounds only seen in combat.

Reports suggest that the small, homemade explosives were packed with ball bearings that tore off feet, ankles, calves and entire legs and they exploded just outside the crowded finish line.

So far ten of the victims are feared to have lost limbs in the worst terror blast in the worst terror atrocity on US soil since 9/11 – two brothers lost a leg each in the blast.

‘These runners just finished and they don’t have legs now,’ 35-year-old Roupen Bastajian, a Rhode Island state trooper and former Marine, told the New York Times. ‘So many of them. There are so many people without legs. It’s all blood. There’s blood everywhere. You got bones, fragments. It’s disgusting.’

Mr Bastajian, who was also running in the marathon, said if he had not beaten his 2011 pace in the race, he, too, might have been one of the victims.

Doctors treating victims at hospitals across the city said many of the injuries had been caused by ‘small metal debris’, but could not confirm if they were ball bearings, which would point towards the type of device used.

Peter Fagenholz, a trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, said 29 patients were being treated there, eight of whom were in a critical condition.

He said many of the injuries were to the lower limbs and that ‘several’ amputations had been carried out.

‘It’s just depressing that it’s intentional. I can’t say I’ve ever seen this volume of patients come this quickly with this type of injury,’ he told the Daily Telegraph after having already carried out six operations.

‘It’s a lot of small metal debris. We can’t say if they were placed there intentionally or were just part of the blast.’

Dr Michael Epstein, who works in the emergency department at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said at least 21 victims were in their care.

The injuries ranged from eardrum damage to those with life-threatening injuries, with some suffering ‘extensive damage’, he added.

Brigham and Women’s treated 31 patients, many of whom had orthopaedic wounds.

A spokesman told the Daily Telegraph the victims were tested for background radiation but no contamination was found.

Even seasoned firefighters were sickened by what unfolded on a beautiful spring day in Boston.

‘In 28 years, this is definitely the worst I’ve seen,’ Boston Fire Department District Chief Ron Harrington told NBC News.

‘Bodies and body parts. Blood all over. A little boy lying in the street. A young woman in her twenties. Both dead. It was mayhem. I saw two people with arms hanging loose, and one without a leg.

‘A shoe with flesh still in it.’

At least 17 people are in critical condition and some are not expected to survive the night.

Three people have died, including eight-year-old Martin Richard, who was waiting for his father near the finish line.

Several news outlets have reported that ball bearings were used in the bombs. The small steel balls are popular among bomb-makers the world over because each one becomes a deadly projectile when launched by the explosive force of a bomb.

Some doctors, though, said they found street debris in the wounds of their patients, not ball bearings.

‘Rocks, bits of metal, soda cans, anything that is really close to a blast like that can be fragmented,’ Dr. Ron Walls, chair of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, told ABC News.

‘Everything we saw was ordinary material that could have been propelled by the device.’

Hotel owner Marc Hagopian told MailOnline how he witness unimaginable carnage 35 yards from the bomb explosion.

‘It was chaos – blood and limbs everywhere. There was a man who had lost a leg, another had lost both,’ he said.

‘There were seven, eight, nine people lying on the ground. They appeared to be dead.

‘Marathon runners were tearing off their shorts to use as tourniquets to help the injured.’

Mark was inside the Charlesmark Hotel, on Boyston Street, when the first bomb went off. As he rushed outside, the second exploded.

‘There was blood everywhere, along with severed limbs. It was just awful,’ he said.

The second bomb came about 10 seconds after the first. People were knocked off their feet by the force of it.’

Mark, 50, videotaped the aftermath, showing a man lying apparently unconscious on the pavement covered in blood.

A voice can be heard asking: “What the f*** happened, a bomb?”

Another man, wearing a David Beckham soccer shirt, is seen running around.

The area around the hotel was evacuated. Mark and his guests gathered in a restaurant two blocks away waiting for police instructions.

Hagopian’s mother Marcia Scott-Harrison, who was evacuated from nearby Commonwealth Avenue, said: ‘Mark is in total shock but at least he wasn’t hit.

‘His hotel is just yards from the finish line. A man sitting outside the hotel had his leg blown off. It is awful.

‘I heard both explosions, then a dozen cops came running up Commonwealth Avenue. They were shouting for everyone to get off the street.

‘There were young girls crying, I pulled three into my apartment building. It was chaos. No one knew what was happening.’

Runners turned around after pounding 26 miles and raced into the disaster zone.

‘Somebody’s leg flew by my head,’ spectator John Ross told the Boston Herald. ‘I gave my belt to stop the blood.’

Videos show runners stripping off their shirts and tying them around the legs of wounded spectators for tourniquets.

Gestures as small as offering a drink of orange juice and use of a home bathroom were recounted on Twitter in an ongoing online recollection of the fellowship that emerged in the wake of Monday’s devastation.

‘People are good. We met a woman who let us come into her home and is giving us drinks,’ tweeted Ali Hatfield, a Kansas City, Missouri runner who was in town for the race.

As the city reeled from the tragedy that killed at least three and wounded at least 100, Bostonions seemed to steady themselves by reaching out to embrace those hurting even more.

‘Two Lutheran pastors walking Commonwealth, Bibles in hand. For those who need comfort, they said,’ tweeted Chelsea Conaboy, a Boston Globe blogger.

A Google Docs form was quickly set up to allow Boston residents to open their homes to marathon runners from outside the area who had no place to stay in the aftermath of the tragedy.

‘Anyone wanting to get out of the back bay come over plenty of tables and calm here and don’t worry you don’t have to buy a thing,’ tweeted a local restaurant called El Pelon Taqueria. ‘open wifi, place to charge cell, or just don’t want to be alone, food and drinks,- pay only if you can #bostonhelp.’

Pictures of heroism and humanity flooded Twitter, from police officers carrying injured young children to the residents who left their warm homes to greet runners stranded by the emergency and offer them comfort.

Fatma Tanis, a student journalist who was at the scene, told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning: ‘I saw a fireball and smoke coming our way and at the same time parents started grabbing their kids, children started crying and everyone just started running away from where the explosion happened.

She added that she instinctively walked towards the site of the explosion following the second blast and saw injured people.

‘It was extreme chaos, some people had missing limbs. People were trying to help they were holding down the wounds – pretty much everyone was in shock.

‘THERE WAS A COLLECTIVE SCREAM THAT WENT ON AND ON…’

… Jeff Chin, 27, who was a block from the explosion, spoke to People magazine about the horror he witnessed:

… ‘People started screaming. I saw a guy with his shirt off, and it was wrapped around his hand and it was soaked red with blood…

… ‘What you don’t see on TV is how loud it was after the fact. Imagine there were hundreds of people just screaming at the top of their lungs, screaming so loud. It was like a sustained scream, collective scream and it went on and on. It was piercing, just the terror that you could hear…

… ‘It was a nightmare, the worst thing you can imagine…

… ‘It was like every sense of mine was heightened, I was feeling and seeing and hearing everything. I never want to go through anything like it again, it was terrifying…’

…………………………….

.

.

In a tweet hours later, Mohsen revealed how shaken he was by the blast, ‘Only now has it hit me. Holding back tears best I can.’

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos. A man was pictured with his lower leg blown off, while children were seen being wheeled away in chairs with burned limbs.

Blood and broken glass was strewn across the sidewalks, while a emergency worker was seen checking the pulses of young women lying on the ground.

A trauma nurse told ABC that the race’s medical tent has become a makeshift morgue and that staff are dealing with injuries including severed limbs, shrapnel wounds and children with severe burns.

There were reports that a three-year-old child was injured and taken to hospital, while Adidas, which is a sponsor of the marathon, said it is still trying to figure out if all of its workers are safe.

David Abel, a reporter for the Boston Globe who was standing just feet from the finish line to record runners, recounted the scene of horror he witnessed.

‘I saw just a pile of bodies,’ he said. ‘It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life… mangled limbs, people not breathing. Within minutes, police, medical staff, marathon staff [arrived] and were just trying to carry people off as quickly as possible.’

Beck Dangler, who was on a fifth-floor patio overlooking the finish line, told NBC News that when the explosions went off, he saw a plume of smoke ‘and then the immediate scatter’.

‘You could smell it,’ he said. ‘It smelled like a giant firecracker… Then there was immediate pandemonium.’

A doctor in a medical tent around 150 yards from one of the explosions told ABC News he immediately ran to the scene.

‘We all went running over there and started to bring people into the medical tent,’ he said. ‘It was not good. Very bad. Like a war zone. 9/11 immediately came to mind.’

NBCSN reported that some marathon runners who crossed finish line continued to run to Mass General Hospital to give blood.

ABC reporter Josh Elliott tweeted that the emergency room at Massachusetts General hospital said they have carried out multiple amputations, with the number of patients as high as 25.

Every one of the 2,100 Boston police officers in the city were ordered to respond to the scene, and Boston police chief Ed Davis said FBI and state police were also sending personnel.

Steven Saurbier, who saw the explosion’s aftermath from his window, described the swift police response after he witnessed the scene from his apartment.

‘Police swarmed immediately,’ he said. ‘They removed one or two people after patting them down. There were a lot of injured people… I estimate 20 people were medically transported… I saw a woman being carried by two men and I am almost positive her left leg was blown off at the knee.’

Of the police officers in the city, around 1,000 would have working on the event already, Bratton said, with a concentrated police presence around the finish line and the area behind it.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis described the moments following the explosions and said the FBI and state police immediately sent resources.

‘All of the victims have been moved from the scene we have sent officers to hospitals to be in touch with family members and possible witnesses,’ he said.
